1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

No longer new, 36 year old Carlton, still on the top-line.

No longer new, my 36 year old Carlton, still on the top-line.

First two photographs on my FLICKR page.

This old cycle still amazes me. It will outlast me. They used to make stuff to outlast a lifetime in the day.

But it makes me a better cyclist than I would otherwise be, so is life enhancing for all that.

    Dear David,

The nice thing is that the old thing is daily rider.

Not a precious shelf-queen, but a robust machine that goes well with only weekly TLC.

Currently needs a new freewheel and chain, [I did the brake pads this week], but still running nicely. SJS Cycles still sell good 5, 6 and 7 speed [IRD] freewheels, and seven speed Shimano chain is not expensive.Nobody has placed a spanner or Allen key on the fine old lady except me for more than a decade, and truth to tell is that setting up Campag bearings is easy with some sympathy for the machine ...

    Best wishes from George

I remember you waxing eloquently on the Naim forum a few years ago. I paid particular attention because I live in the next village to Carlton in Lindrick where the first models were made, before production moved to the Raleigh factory in Nottingham.
Sincerely glad it still gives you pleasure, George.

This Carlton will last way longer than any of those rust buckets.

Maybe as long as my mid 70's Pennine road bike (road bike!?? It's RACER!)

I must admit Lotus Carlton was my first thought! I’m guessing there must be a few still kicking around.

I just sold my Tour de France replica - it's the 40th anniversay this year of Zoetemelk's victory for Team Raleigh. It was the Carlton lads who set up the SBDU in Ilkeston in the mid 70s making high end racing frames
