New Record Shops

Musical Bons
A counter thread to Record Shops RIP is it.

Ripped in Edinburgh, modern , CD only it seems, but good to have.

Avalanche have moved to Grassmarket, increased the stock of S/h vinyl by several factors and have a coffee machine. Sadly no records for me there, better pickings in Underground Solulshns nearby there.

Whilst in That Manchester, went to the NEW Eastern Bloc in Stevenson Square is it. Same people, now combined with a wholefood cafe type arrangement, so you can sip a Latte whilst listening to Nosebleed techno.

As ever with EB, lots of good recomendations from the RSA, including modestly, his own tracks slipped in the pile.

The old Eastern Bloc is now a trendy hairdressers, so not likely to attract the likes of me there.

Good idea for a thread, DS. Some positive news is always welcome, as the temperature drops and the economy goes to the dogs.

Not a new shop, but Classic LPs in Malvern is now relaunched as Carnival Records. I noticed it as I went past on the train the other day. Not checked it out yet but it was good before and it's now open to real (not just internet) visitors every day except Sunday. LP and CD, new and s/h. Some photos on their facebook page, which look promising.

Cause for celebration, there is a new New vinyl store in Brizzle, called Idle Hands, in Stoke Croft, specialising in my sorts of music, so plenty of Mote, Ost Gut, Sandwell, Underground Quality, Frozen Border and their own record label, called Idle Hands is it.

Run by some of the people from the departed shop Rooted, so that is a good thing to happen there.

There are now 5 records shops in that stretch of road out of the city centre to Cheltenham Road.

[RC6 - Plastic Wax had a LOAD of indie 12" going cheapish, so many Fall, Morrisey, Creation bands and MS & THD additional fey indie pop you couldn't hardly move there. I got a couple of bagfulls and left]

I can confirm it is open, I have shopped in there, one shop of new, a lot of vinyl, and next door a shop of s/h vinyl is it.

Good range of material, something for everyone there, and friendly shopkeep too.

a new secondhand shop for vinyl and cd in whitby, in the shambles market on sandgate/marketplace. Not a bad trio, within ambling distance, a good pint of theakstones in the board, fish and chips from riverside, and s/hand vinyl in the middle.

Cheers for the tip - just struggling with potential trips to That Brizzle in near future....<hang on>...quick glance at Hull City fixture list see them playing there late October. Pencilled in.

Can I please mention Carnival Records again? I popped in today and left with a couple of records and a smile on my face. It really is a brilliant place; so friendly, helpful and well-stocked that I've hardly bought anything online for months. I feel positive about the future of records and CDs if a new shop as good as this can open in a sleepy Midlands town. It's worth making a detour to Malvern to pay them a visit.

A plug post for Endless Records, 6 Kensington Gardens, Brighton, in the same space Edgeworld used to be in is it, above that trendy clothes shop, look for the sign in the first storey window.

New vinyl records, multi-genres, minimal techno, bass, dubstep, experimental, electronica, indie, noise, also cassettes, also s/h rock and esoteric bands, none of those 5" plastic discs that seems to have taken over (Well not many)

Not the same volume of stock as Edgeworld, but they have just started. Also less Indie Hip-Hop.

So go in there and have a look, and you might get a nice record to listen to.

Amazing how a town like Bexhill can muster 3 records shops and some major towns and cities none is it.

In the Vinyl Exchange yesterday and picked up 2 cd's what I purposely went in for. The previous Sunday I visited and picked up a CD what I had also gone in for.
Who needs Amazon if this continues.

Oh, thats handy, I may well be down in Dawzet at the weekend is it.

This is a good trend developing of records shops opening in smaller towns there.

Another one new to me, Disc-o-Box in Sunny Weymouth, several racks of vinyl, mostly fairly trad rock and the like is it.

Also had a good shop in Chunes, where the locals have gone off Acid Techno, and got rid of their vinyls, allowing me to take away 3 bags full.

Another one new to me but not actually new is it.

Vinyl Underground in Northampton. One of best disguised records shops I have ever found, no signs, no information outside, hidden in the 2nd storey of a furniture showroom, but racks and racks of new and s/h beat oriented vinyls there, including up to the minute stuff like Cut Hands, Obtane, Adapta, Francesco Baudazzi, and older stuff too. They are related to the s/h shop above Wolf & Gypsy in That Brighton,

Friendly and knowledgeable RSAs, came away full hearted with a box of vinyls, bags not enough.

Transplant is it:

visited That Lincoln today and found a v decent shop at the bottom of Steep Hill in an arcade called Back To Mono. They had plenty of stereo records to light my candle incl some Virgin Prunes, Happy Mondays, Monochrome Set and Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers (actually in mono!). They also sell old bits of hifi kit. Altogether a very nice experience.

DS

Another new one to me, but not actually new is it:

Red Rose Records in Boscombe, Dorset, in The Royal Arcade, a faded shopping destination in Bournemouth's shabby cousin.

T-Shirts and associated stuff on ground floor, vinyl downstairs spread across the popular genres, prices reasonable, I came away with indie / disco / electronica in a bag, so good there.
