Naim Uniti - Screen replacement and Streaming Board upgrade

Cheers for that Skipper 44. it's improved my knowledge. I think there may have been a little confusion originally as to what cable Skyebridge actually needed. From the replacement manual from the French chap (I presume you have the same one as me), the display itself is directly soldered to the front panel PCB via long pins - the short cable you mention, and the one I have, is for the Uniti2 and other models of that era (mine came from a 172). On the Uniti1 It looks like the display PCB uses a long cable to connect to the main PCB at the rear and it looks about right to be about 400mm or so. It also looks to have a lot more than 28 pins, but I may be wrong. Though, of course the display and method of connection may have been changed in later versions of the Uniti1.
Skybridge, when you have a look at the Uniti again, can you let us know if there are any markings on the original cable that is broken? Apologies if you have already mentioned this!

Thanks Al M, For clarity/awareness regarding different cables used, and thanks for all the info and advice I've found most useful, throughout this thread. You mentioned in an earlier post that you replaced the screen on a 172. That's probably the closest to the SuperUniti layout as it gets, and I request you for the instructions booklet used. My email address has been DM'd.

Skipper44,
The FFC cable required by my Uniti-1 (Series 6 transformer, which by the way CANNOT be 'moved to one side' as required by the screen replacement Manual) has a length of 40 cm (400 mm).

I'm in correspondence with the French guy, like @Al M, he says the "big flat cable" is probably responsible for my SuperUniti front panel Logo and push-buttons LED blanking. He says I can buy the cable from him. Incase you're still searching, you can try him again on <[email protected]> and ask if he has the cable you seek.

For anyone doing the screen change, I'd emphasise the point made by @Al M, "the French guy", input just received from a reliable NAIM repair facility, and my own experience - don't mess with the big flat cable, avoid pulling it out of the pcb mounted connector. Incase you absolutely have to, the connector in question is a LIF type connector, i.e. 'low insertion force', so insert and remove the flexible flat cable, FFC, firmly + gingerly, you should not have to use undue force on anything by ensuring that everything is well squared up before pushing/pulling (a slight side to side oscillation maybe ok while pulling). Incase the blue stiffeners at the ends get detached from any of the FFC spread a very tiny bit of PVC solvent cement (the type used for PVC plumbing pipes), clamp being careful not to disfigure the cable and let it set for an hour before use.

Does anyone have an actual link to the French eBay site where they have purchased the replacement screen? I have tried searching but only Chinese suppliers show up. Either the seller's actual store name or ID or a link to any one of the products he sells. I have both a UnitiQute 2 and a Uniti 2 with dead screens, useable through the app but, as discussed in many threads, it would be nicer to actually see the screen.

Hello All,

Firstly, thanks for all the support and suggestions received.

My health is sometimes wobbly, so I may go 'offline' for unpredictable periods.

The updates on this are as follows:

1. After many frustrating weeks of non-response from Naim about where I could get a replacement 40cm internal flat cable for my Uniti-1, they sent one to Jon at Audio-T in Headington, Oxford, the immensely helpful Naim Dealer I used when I lived in that area.
2. Once that came through I was able to complete fitting the replacement screen that I bought from France last year. The screen works perfectly and is clearly of the same origin as Naim's supply (i.e. it is not a 'clone').
3. Care is needed at each step, and 'instructions' are not always correct (e.g. mine said 'Move the transformer', but Naim confirmed that is not possible with the Uniti-1 Issue-6 platform). So, be prepared to 'work around' directions, including appropriate tools and various nuts, bolts etc.

All's well that ends well, and the friend for whom I repaired this Uniti is very happy to have it back in service!

Skyebridge

Just a heads up, Naim have some new stock of displays.
Tried to get a Uniti qute 2 screen (not 192) replaced last year to no avail.
Tried again now and they can do it through my local Audio T dealer ÂŁ159 + post.

Sourced a replacement screen from France (as above), arrived in a week and pdf giving installation instructions followed after a request. I thought it looked like a tricky repair and asked a local audio electronics specialist to do it for me. He said it was tricky but all is working now. Very pleased.
Hi there: ca you advise who your local audio specialist is who replaced the screen? I have sourced a screen from Matthieu and can't thus far find someone to change it for me. Best wishes ....
