Naim amps and balanced outputs

...Naim .... Do their amps not increase in power with price?

Not as much as you'd think...the nomenclature was based on the power delivery in to a 4 Ohm load (more or less halve it for the more standard 8Ohm figures):
  • NAP90...2 x 45W
  • NAP110...2 x 55W
  • NAP140...2 x 70 W
  • NAP160...2 x 80W
  • NAP 200...2 x 100W
  • NAP 250...2 x 125W
  • Nap 135...1 x 135W
I have no idea of the current generation of amps holds to the same system.

Neil - it does.

As for balanced inputs - unless active circuits are very, very carefully designed (or an appropriate transformer used) and you are in a noisy environment, there's no reason boggo single-ended connections can't be at least as good, simply becasue tehre is less to get wrong. Plenty of detail and interesting papers on balanced connections (and the usual flaws in implementation) by Bill Whitlock on the excellent Jensen transformer website.
