Munich show 2022

I'm just loving the heat sink porn. These amps almost look like artworks...

Nope, your not drunk, they look that way for real.

Hi Rico, it's been a while since I've seen your posts.

It is not at all surprising that the first time I've ever heard of, and listened to Jazz at the Pawnshop was at an audio store, and by this point I had already been listening to jazz seriously for more than a decade...

Frankly I've found hifi shows to be depressing. The best things I can say about them is sometimes there are good music stalls around, with good offers.

And the music...is even more depressing. For the large part, it's usually the same few audiophile favorites of sonically 'superior' recordings of music devoid of any real musical merit. And they tend to focus on simple music that does not really put the equipment to the test. They love to showcase how good the soundstaging or imaging is, as if that is an important trait of good music reproduction.

Munich may be the greatest (hifi) show on earth but I have no desire to attend it. There are better things to do in Munich...

Sort of.

Here is my SAC KH-1000, a purpose built headphone (!) amplifier for the AKG K-1000 earphones. Originally branded AKG, later sold as SAC:

And it gets VERY hot.

This is the nearest I got...

That top panel is 20mm thick of solid CNC machined aircraft grade aluminium and the amplifier delivers 2.6 watts per channel (pure Class A) into 8 ohms.

I really don't get the negativity about hi-fi shows. I attended them for years as a punter and then later when I became a reviewer. The fact is that I love them because I love discovering brilliant new products, brilliant new music (thanks Shazam!) and I always find it really interesting to be able to compare Naim/Focal with Nagra/Wilson and then five minutes later with Auralic/ATC. There's nowhere else on earth you can get that breadth of experience within the space of 20 mins.

Add in the very interesting talks from experts, sometimes even some camaraderie between audio fans, and the opportunity to hear systems that are state of the art and I personally think such shows are unmissable. Sure there will be rooms that don't perform as well as others but on the whole manufacturers work hard to create some stunning sounds and rooms. I still remember loving Naim's 10th floor active DBL demos on the 10th floor at Bristol back in the day - what a great opportunity to hear their top system - something I would never have been able to do in a hi-fi shop when clearly I could never afford it.

I did 4 days at Munich this year, my first time there and even to this veteran it was truly mind blowing and mind enhancing! Some of my reporting from there:

PS I don't like the tinkly music either but to be fair a lot of great music was played. One of my most memorable moments was when I asked to hear Jon and Vangelis "I'll find my way home" on the Auralic/ATC system just a day after Vangelis passing - hugely moving!

Hifi shows are great for seeing hifi, and comparing old farrs talking behind you in rooms disparately set up in terms of acoustic quality.

Always looking for the positives Si ;)

The NW Audio show at Carnage this weekend is a very enjoyable show and has great atmosphere, yes some rooms are sonically compromised, but some rooms sound fantastic (i'd put this down to the skill of the people setting it up, Fanthorpes Room for me last time).
