Mono tonearm [wiring ]

Im nearly pulling my hair out cant figure it out
I have a calrad sv12 tonearm mono needs rewiring ,simple you think well i cant seem to get anything but hum ? 2 cartridge tags surely you cant go wrong ? so for the sake of argument cable has centre and earth /shield solder as normal to phono plug checked continuity fine no problems arm seems to have 2 earths 1 in centre of arm near cartridge pins and one at the base someone help what am i doing wrong im sure it has something to do with the earth Helpppppppppppppppppppppp before Im totally bald

Have you got a meter? The first step is to continuity check everything and make sure there is nothing in common that shouldn't be, i.e. make sure you have a signal, a return and an earth and that they are all separate! Post some pics so we can see what you have.
