MM before but now MC

Have just replaced a goldring 1042 with ortofon mc25e. First impressions are more low end, detail, soundstaging. In fact everything sounds better. Instruments sound more realistic and vocals have so much more clarity. There seems more surface noise but I think its because the new cartridge is retrieving more info from the vinyl.
It took a bit of setting up due to ortofon cartridge being 4 grams heavier and also much larger.

There appears to be a low frequency hum when pre-amp exposure vii is switched to MC input. Is that normal? It isn't coming from the turntable as is there when turntable is off.

Also can the ortofon be used via the MM input as it has quite a high output, I barely have to turn the volume for a decent level.
