Well after a bit of messing around I've finally got this working and I have to say as a music discovery medium it really is rather excellent. Music quality is entirely acceptable on spotify premuim. Very very impressed.

System back end, 552, 500 room 1/ 552 / avondale room 2

If you have an iPhone 4 you can do away with the Mac altogether.
The phone will now play Spotify via either a wireless of mobile connection and stream this to the AE or other Airplay device.

Makes for a very minimalist system with a vast library.

Try ripping some tunes in Apple lossless too

Ah, that's where we hit a snag - 500 gig lossless wont fit on the iPhone.

I have everything ripped to a 13" MBP fitted with a 1TB drive and pretty much dedicated as an audio streamer.

Me too Rob. OP has a Mac so could rip/stream/play on that to the AE or NDAC, then control all via an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
