To all you vinyl/LP12 boffins out there..............

I've this LP12 Nima/D17-3/P-75 with a DIY geddon............sounding very good...........

but the felt platter mat (now oval in shape) and not looking as it should (ragged). As the record now has contact with less surface area of the mat (it is very oval) would this adversley affect the sound/performance.

Is there a better type of material for the job.?????

I know theres lots of 'specialist' mats on the market, do they work, anyone have any advice.........or do I just buy a new nice 'round' Linn replacement mat.

TIA

Graham

I swiped the mat off my old Rega P2 after my 3 year old 'decorated' the Linn mat! It works a treat.

I've tried other mats like the original Spectra (Dumpa) mat on my LP12, however, they all produced unfavourable results. All the rubbery type mats also had me fiddling with the suspension tuning and cartidge VTA to keep things bouncing along :(

I'd stick with the Linn replacement; they can be had on ebay quite reasonably.

Try a mat cut to the diameter of the label so the LP has a gap between the platter & the LP.. I had surprising good results with only a piece of 3mm 100 diam cork .. but that was with a 10" diam platter .. you may try a reduced diameter mat to suit your ragged edges & the warp of the worst record
