Living Room Layout. Ideas?

Ongoing renovation, room pictured will be a living room with TV and the Hi-Fi. Photos are taken from opposite corners and the room is 15' x 18'. Hi-Fi will be to the right of the windows, speakers either side of a sofa infront of the windows and probably another sofa opposite against blue square. There is a door to the right of the square not in the pic. Central heating is being replaced, we need the four rads if keeping cast iron, fewer if they are replaced with more efficient ones.

Problem is the telly, I think it would be okay in the corner with the two rads, positioned away from the walls, next to one of the speakers. Other half doesn't and wants to get rid of the radiators and push it right into the corner.

Will be installing a dedicated mains and running speaker cable under the floor so position will be fixed.

Anyone with similar set up with hi-fi and furniture under windows and a tv in the corner? Any other ideas?

Paul.

What do you spend most time doing in there? Watching TV or listening to music. Do you use the Hifi speakers at TV speakers?

Just to throw a spanner in the works (and this might be more of an 'audio' forum thought than OT), ferromagnetic radiators can, IME, have a parasitic effect on systems, if you're routing speaker cables anywhere near them. Massy, ferromagnetic radiators even more so. So perhaps, if you're considering replacing them, look at aluminium.

Are you keeping the shelves in the alcoves?

50/50 however this will be the main hi-fi, there will be another TV room. Speakers wont be used with the tv.

Looks like a lovely room, with a view over a garden. And is that a real, high quality wood floor? Maybe it could be cleaned and refurbished? With a couple of good oriental rugs over it? The only thing that immediately springs to mind is not to spoil such a beautiful, timeless room with by putting a TV in it.

Had that discussion, and I quite like the idea, means finding somewhere for a 2nd TV.

Telly on chimney, speakers in alcove. Sofa on wall by door. Put the parquet floor back and don’t forget the rug

Windows are too big. That glass is going to vibrate in symphony with the speakers causing soooooooooooooooo much ssssssssssssssssss-sibilance.

You'll need to be blocking up the windows, removing the radiators.....oh and you're about it check the floor ain't bouncy.. .

As they look like single glazed, wood-framed sash windows, you'll want thermal blinds in the alcoves and thermal lined curtains on the existing poles. If you do that, either don't use the rads in alcoves, or better, get rid of them and replace it with a one on the wall between the two.

And if you need the chandelier cleaning, can I recommend these guys? They're cheap.

was it good parquet? or the fake stuff on bitumen sheets?

To allay everyones concerns with the floor, it had to come up downstairs as no crawl space and need to run pipework and cable. The floor is tongue and goove oak parquet and yes it's quite nice, most of it is re-usable.

Photo of it still in place upstairs.
