Leaking Leak

Stereo 20 mains transformer wax leaking out. Hasn't penetrated to the underside. Is this normal? Should I try to chip it away or leave well alone? Unit is working fine. I only removed the transformer covers for painting.

If it is working fine I’d leave it be. It is likely an indication of a past problem. If the amp has been properly serviced since hopefully that problem no longer exists. Also bear in mind that when new these amps were frequently located in cabinets without adequate ventilation. The wax has likely been like that for decades.

PS If you think it is fresh and melting in use now then yes, that is certainly a problem. Get the amp looked at.

Okay, thanks Tony. I'll leave it and just keep an eye on the mains transformer temperature when in use.

As Tony has commented, you should be O.K.
In this instance. it appears that the leakage is minor and it is doubtful whether the past overheating issue has compromised the integrity of the windings.

Mine had emitted a veritable lake of the stuff before I got it, but now it has the right value components in it again and is running out in the open it’s fine.
