‘Is That Black Enough For You ?!?’ is a 2022 film, available on Netflix.
Written and directed by Elvis Mitchell, it is a documentary film examining (in depth) African-American cinema.
I have had this film on my watch list for months, and finally got to it a couple of days ago. The film is hard-hitting and detailed. I need to watch it again and make notes on which films I want to see and which soundtracks I can add to my collection.
Also the film just requires a few views to absorb the enormity of the subject.
I didn’t agree with every point being made, and women don’t come out that well although there is some respect paid to Pam Grier and a few others. I note that Gay/+ stereotypes are not examined.
There is an anger running through the documentary that is thoroughly legitimate.
Fascinating, informative and potentially uncomfortable for a ‘White’ audience, this is essential viewing for those who would like to dig deeper into cinematic history and black culture.
