I'm tempted to post a clip of Lisa playing the saxamaphone.

Search YT for anything by Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Scott Hamilton, et al......

A clip to represent all that is good about the sax?

Surely there can only be one choice!!

On the other hand, this was great and probably turned a few folks onto the sax

And of course, there is this popular little number.

It is generally accepted that the sax (any sax) is the "Best" instrument yet to be invented. Ever.

So, hats off to Adolphe. Nice one Mr Sax.

Apart from the greats such as Coltrane et-al my favourite bit of sax is from Transformer:Satellite Of Love or anything on a Bowie album.

Well, happy birthday M. Sax.

Oh yes!!

I was thinking I was the only one ever heard of the guy.

Long ago I had a 78 of him.. Parlophone I think. Song of the Islands c/w Liebestraum. Can't find any reference to it anywhere.

But if you want my faves....

Coleman Hawkins perfection.

Paul Desmond at his most sublime..

I agree. Wonderful playing. Melodic and melancholic at the same time.

But it was always Brubeck that turned my head in this. Lovely note choices, with a heavy classical influence coming out (although with bluesyness too ).

How to make a 12 bar blues sound like Bach or Debussy.

Moving on from Desmond, how about this :

Many folks think of this as "cheesy" now, but this is possibly because of its own success, in being played so much.( I think it either is, or is very close to being the most recorded song ever ). Familiarity breeds contempt ?

I think it is perfect in what it is, and perfectly captures the vibe.

The solo by Getz is fantastic. Note choice, rhythm... and that sound.
Perfection.

Interesting comparison. Thing is I'd take out Astrud. She got away with Girl From.. . etc., and some other stuff, but she really wasn't much of a singer.
Getz certainly had a 'sound' and I like his mellowness. But I wonder how inventive/creative he was cf. Desmond?

Try this.

Try to find the whole 'Late Lament' album.. preferably on Bluebird Vinyl. It is truly magnificent.
