Haven't read every post in the thread and I may be going off-topic a little, but in these days of digital cameras it is well worth going room to room and taking a shot of everything in the house (not down to macro shots of LP covers!) and then storing the shots online somewhere.
I do this every time I renew the insurance so I have at least an aide-memoire.
