a few of those are very good, but you don't have any diagonals in there ;-)

i would also notch up the contrast a touch in mastering. i am guessing you relied on an in-camera reflected meter, which tends toward overexpose in situations like these.

Yes, I was using the built-in meter; I'm using f8 and a tripod, and trying to push up the exposure to just before clipping so I can have maximum latitude to play around with the raw files. I'd like to have a go with a proper meter to see how much difference it makes - I'll borrow one and have a play.

I can be too conservative on contrast, but I really dislike the way strong contrast can bugger up subtle tones and colours.
