God help the independent record stores

My local independent record store in Chesterfield will be closing tomorrow for the foreseeable future. Mrs Tallbird herself said that they'll be relying on Boris's compensation.

I believe that Mr Tallbird is a musician so that's their other revenue stream severely restricted also.

They do have a website, which I will be ordering records through.

God help them, they're really nice people.

We can't go to the pub - we buy bottled beer and other drinks (well, I certainly have).

We can't go to the cinema - we buy films in some other form, DVDs in my case.

We can't go to live music - we buy more recordings.

I would have thought that independent record shops with an established customer base might do OK (not brilliantly, but OK), as long as people are able to spend any money at all...

I was thinking that I might need to order a new stylus to cope with the extra record spinning hours while working and staying in at home. I would have thought that many record specialists sell online in some form so there may still be an opportunity for some sales at least.

Because her USP is the shop. On-line she's competing with Amazon and many others who have huge warehouses and are quicker and cheaper than her. The shop was a nice place to flick through records and chat. I will miss that if she goes under.

If I was her I really wouldn't want to be relying on Boris's wonderful promises to come through.

One thing you could do to help your local store would be to buy gift vouchers. Lets you give them a chunk of money just now when they need it and get it back once they're out of the woods.

Boris' promises sound good but unless they're implemented quickly they're not going to work. I'm sure that there will still be businesses that fall through the cracks.

Yes, that's a good idea!

I think it's true to say, the businesses that weren't viable in the first place, won't survive.

I think they need more help than that.

Worldwide virus, thousands have died allready.

Statistics predict much more unfortunately.

Only Taiwan and South Korea seem to have had an effective prepare.

UK haven't really faced the peak and USA could be a disaster with hundreds of thousands lost lost souls.

And people are worried about a pub visit or some vinyl...eh!

Yeah, but lots of perfectly good one will close too. I know people have a great little cafe in Glasgow. It's always packed, doing well, recently refurbished it. Now it's empty.

Worldwide it doesn't look good for certain countries. Italy is the obvious and very tragic example.

From a purely UK centric view, we are better off than most. It hasn't spread as extensively here for whatever reason.

Our big problem is the totally ineffective government we have. The Downing Street briefings are totally inadequate and made by people who are not leaders. Boris is useless as a crisis leader. He doesn't understand that he needs a good slogan that must be repeated and repeated.

This virus has one vulnerability and that is soap and water neuters it. Wash your hands thoroughly every time before you put something in your mouth. It's as simple as that.

What utter tosh!

Actually, you're right. it is.

We're not better off, just two weeks behind Italy but the numbers tie up. We can expect similar fatalities in a few weeks. Talk to people in the NHS, they know what's coming.

And soap has limited effectiveness against and virus that can fly.

The virus can only fly in spit. Keep washing those hands. If we are genuinely two weeks behind Italy, and why not, a huge shitstorm is coming that many, especially the young, seem fairly oblivious to.

I rang up Sister Ray in Berwick Street, London on Thursday. They were still selling records but not buying any, which makes sense.

Jack

Sh*t happens with any business and we all need to adapt to survive.

Mail order is the only game in town and the way forward at the moment. We are are all going to be bored so may actually buy more records or hifi.

Reassured with how the government is reacting.

That's what I'm keeping my fingers crossed for to happen! I'm staying open for business as long as I'm healthy and as long as post offices and couriers continue to function. I guess it's possible business could even increase with so many folk stuck at home using their hi fi's.... conversely the worry is people may consider even a short trip to post office, face mask in place and hand sanitiser at the ready, to post that faulty Acme MkII amp to me for repair as a risk too far...
I'm tempted to start a thread with a poll for the benefit of all the traders on pfm to get some idea of whether folks would still go to a hi fi dealers, buy S/H hi fi on-line from traders, or send stuff off to be repaired or not...
