Flat Earth Revival?

Just to stir the pot a touch.... if one found that Flat Earth systems were musically more engaging than accurate Round Earth systems then that would be a general claim based on listening to two different approaches to making music in the home..?

It would be a statement about your preferences, but you couldn't generalize it to "Flat Earth systems were musically more engaging than accurate Round Earth systems" without adding "to me".

I do find this prohibition on making claims a tad limiting. This is not a scientific or engineering forum. It is related to such topics, obviously, and spouting arrant nonsense will no doubt attract appropriate criticism, but I'm entitled to give my view on a topic based on the sum of my experience. I'm not forbidden from doing so. Nor is it reasonable for a minor war to erupt whenever I do so and somebody decides I'm not entitled to the conclusions I've drawn, from the evidence they infer.

Sometimes, I think people are so keen to jump down others' throats, that they accuse them of making spurious claims, when all they've done is given an opinion or observation off their own experience. Just because somebody hasn't expressed themselves with the precision somebody else might prefer, is no reason to respond in the way which some on here do.

From comments I have often read on PFM, several Flat Earthers have changed their tastes to a rounder compromise as they and their hearing have aged

This is reasonable upon first reading , but it needs to be placed in context .

You will find many people on pfm seeking to bestow upon their opinion the status of fact .

For example you will find many a post bestowing universal properties divorced from time and space to a piece of copper .

Such claims need to be questioned .

stick to I tried it and liked it and critique will not follow .

I did say "if one found..."

I don't think that it would be wrong to say "I have found flat earth systems to be ....etc etc...

I know I'm being a touch pedantic..!

But if you say

"I tried it and liked it because the musicians played better in time"

that will attract the sort of horrific thread-crapping and abuse we're all so tired of. It's still a personal opinion, with a possibly helpful expression as to why the person had the preference. They should not need to qualify it by saying:

"I tried it and liked it because my perceptions were that the musicians played better in time with each other."

nor still:

"I tried it and liked it, because although I know you all know it can't possibly have any basis in scientific fact, my perceptions were fooled into believing that the musicians were playing better in time with each other."

yet that is what the prescriptive approach Julf and Gerald advocate would appear to require, if we are not to grant licence for the thread-crappers to run amok.

I'm emphatically not getting at Julf or Gerald here by challenging their point, but I do think due recognition is required for the fact that this is an informal chat forum, not a scientific symposium, and a degree of semantic inexactitude is inevitable and should not be an excuse for those who think it appropriate to derail threads on that premise..

Not to happy about you lumping me in with Julf .:D

And for the record i would never and have never challenged anybody who said
"I tried it and liked it because the musicians played better in time"

i find nothing wrong with the statement you have used . Indeed i would make that statement about many of mods i have made to my hifi .

further if many people make the same subjective statements separately i would suggest a tentative generalization may be in order .

my objections are to opinions masquerading as fact or as fallacious specialist knowledge to be taken seriously.

The thread doesn't get derailed just by someone pointing out the semantic inexactitude, but mostly by the counter-attack against the poor sod who happen to point out the semantic inexactitude...

This is an audio forum. We all wear anoraks. Just seems some anoraks resent the anorak-ness of some of us.

This is great. Could we please have the same discussion on every single thread? Oh, we already do.

Matt,

This time it's personal.

I haven't read the article but I will.

I think the Flat Earth approach has remained alive and well; just look at this Forum, I actually think that's what it was known for.

The more things change....

Hear Here............., nothing has changed except their * Naims, while my * Exposure to something's has evolved, I * Kan still * Linn an open mind to change and as the * EAR has become more taken with * Tube Technology of late, in the * Myst of things, it has proven a wonderful journey down the * Creek in feeling an empty * Voyd, so take * Heed and thread lightly into ones chosen path, and don't anyone go calling out for * Roksan, and while you're at it shave your * Beard, as the Earth has proven to be round after all.

Regards,
