Effect of Mat vs. Changing VTA?

The facility to dial in the vta on the fly oimo, makes a way bigger difference for the better than any mat & I've foolishly tried lots.
The propensity for Linn's silly felt mat to stick to the record and wipe out styli means
throwing it in the bin is a sensible move.

VTA makes a big difference for me - though stylus profile type has a bearing on sensitivity to optimum groove contact.

It makes no sense either using 180gm vinyl for eg, I just picked a selection of the most played records and went for the common average as a reference.

As for felt mats sticking to records, my TT has a neat trick which involves pushing a tiny rubber ring onto the centre spindle, and the mat is recessed in the middle keeping it away from the record label section: it may or may not be adaptable for standard diameter spindles, and you may run into a problem with distorting normal felt mats, additionally the platter has to be recessed for this idea to work.
