E-III Revision

I could go on, but I think you have got the idea I've struck a new level of cosmic inevitability. I shan't complain. Mr Tibbs, if it's not too late, you must find yourself a pair of Seas M15CH001s and evolve your IIIs into IIIRs.

James, It's not too late, but finding a pair M15CH001s is not looking too promising. Just a thought -- would it be possible to use one of those fancy new SEAS excel midrange drivers as an alternative? They appear to use the same mounting flange, but the rest of the spec is best left for you to ponder over :)

Happy new year!

Mr Tibbs

Mr Tibbs,

The M15CH002 is a substantially different driver. I can almost guarantee they won't be a drop in replacement. I'll keep an eye out for a pair of 001s for you. I mix with other strange loudspeaker building types.

Happy new year to you too!

James

I've not heard that excuse before :D I don't think my wife would let me sell mine, either!
It's hard to part with your labour of love. It'd be like selling your children.

I got the impression that you built to order
Only the E-IXs. The others are are too complex and expensive to even contemplate. If I were to make and sell E-IIIRs, I would be expecting a price of at least GBP3K, plus shipping from New Zealand. Properly crated, they'd tip the scales at over 100kg, so you can do the freight maths. However, since the M15CH001 is no longer available, it is a bit of a moot point.

If the E-IXs prove to be a runaway success, I will be designing a 35L sealed box 2-way stand-mount that could fit the bill for less money. But that won't happen for a fair few months. Not until I have the E-X done and dusted.

James

Mr Tibbs,

I keep looking, but none has shown up yet. I'd like to think it's a matter of time. I got close to a pair on a US Forum, but someone pipped me to them. Might not hurt to post a WTB on the PFM Classifieds. The original retail price of them was US$150 each, so it's not exactly stupid money.

We'll keep looking.

James

No worries, Tibbsy.

I have also sent an e-mail to Seas to ask them if any of their distributors might still be habouring a pair or three. I might stock-pile whatever is left.

Thanks for your PM, Tibbsy.

I will rummage through my LspCAD files and send you the BOM tonight. I'll probably rebuild my XO (on a PCB) as well to configure it for multi-amping* and to accommodate a pair of Jantzen Z-Superior caps on the tweeter filter.

James

* have ordered a 4-channel Densen B-340 to go with my B-350 monos to give 6 channels of Danish muscle in preparation to go active with the E-Xs (when I get around to them eventually).

Got the BOM -- many thanks James.

I'll order the parts in a little while. Now that I've managed (all thanks to you) to get those elusive M15 mid's, I can relax a bit and sort the PXOs in the fullness of time. Tibbsville is currently basking in wall to wall sunshine, so the great outdoors must take precedence :))

salut!

Mr Tibbs

BTW since you are now a proper commercial operation, the forthcoming review of my E-IIIRs will be in the audio room -- not the DIY room!

Fair enough. On my side of the world, the day is getting shorter and nights longer. The powertools and shelter of my garage/workshop beckons.

LOL! I don't know if I'll ever commercialise the E-IIIRs, even if the M15 availability is not an issue. They are a lot of work (as you well know), but I guess I could be persuaded to make them at, say, GBP10K per pair plus shipping.

They are a lot of work, but enjoyable work.

GBP10K you say - good to see you obviously reckon the 'R' is a bit special.

On second thought, I probably won't wait too long to get those XO parts ;)

Take stock of what the E-III XO already has. Some of the parts can be recycled. Have you been able to locate a supplier for Jantzens locally?

I see I can use a couple of components from the original PXO.

I'll get something half decent for the HF series capacitor -- probably not a Jantzen though <<screws up face at the thought of using ****y cap's>>

Mr Tibbs,

The Jantzens are anything but ****y. Trust me on this one. For ****y caps, look for anything with silver, gold or oil. The Jantzens Z-Superior caps made quite a difference for a reasonable price (USD15 each).
