Dude, this is the reason I asked about putting a fuse in an external supply using VBEs. I think it was you, yourself, who said you wouldn't use fuses because replacing a MOSFET was a trivial matter, costing little. You obviously failed to factor-in the price of new underpants :)

I once proved the same thing can happen if you drive an LM317 hard enough in reverse. This can also ignite any associated tants... :p
