Cricket 2023

When three of the top four batsmen throw their wickets away playing poor shots the team then becomes reliant on the lower order to make up the difference. And they haven't. And the Aussies haven't even bowled that well...if you're not confident about the short ball get out the way and don't try shots beyond your ability...the bowlers will tire. Yes easy to say; armchair etc.
Then Bairstow: "Even when the ball is pitched up, England are managing to throw away their wickets."

And the "conditions have been against the Aussies" KP
[Looks at weather forecast]Cloud today then fine.

This morning was very odd given how Stokes had played at the end last night.

Although still plenty of help for the bowlers at the moment. So state the obvious, England need early wickets ot have any chance.

KP is confused by Warner's apparoach and going back to his old style that didn't work. Although I think he basically just smells victory and thinks quick runs from him and it's game over and if he is out he has all that batting depth behind him.

I think it might be a beneficial reality-check, if we get hammered in this test now tbh.

I'm back in 1985, dismal england batting collapsing 6-50 against a much better Aus side. But made even worse, bc in 1985 it was bowling being just too good, unlike here where we just limply, pathetically just hand it to them like this.

I can’t help thinking that Bazball or no we’d still be in the same position against the Aussies. We need to at least get a draw otherwise it’s all over.

I agree with the don't be scared of losing part of bazball. What I don't agree with is the entertainment bit at all times and at all costs. It's not entertaining to see a side thrash at everything no matter what and then get out stupidly.

Stokes has to learn to tone down the entertainment and use more of his brain and less of his balls.

Seems England still think they are playing Ireland and not the top test team in the World !
They were overconfident of their ability due to recent success and need to reset their approach as loss no2 on the way

2 tickets available for Sunday, Mound stand. I double booked and the other Fishie coming with me has dropped out due to family commitment

It’s quite entertaining watching the Aussies taking Bazball apart… if only to watch the UK’s fickle sports media turning on the whole notion of it and suddenly saying what a stupid idea it was having been shouting about how great it was just 2 weeks ago. The only sad thing is the England team had started to believe the hype, now they are up against quality opposition the result is the same as ever… they’re not good enough… which is no crime btw, just a fact.

I don't want them to change the spirit of their more recent approach but knowing when to play aggressively is a different matter.

In response to losing Lyon, Cummins tried a short ball spell which would not be sustainable for a long period especially with a key respite bowler already gone and a lot of cricket to play.

England's failure to read what was happening and adapt in response is the big factor here. Leaving those deliveries unless they were really in the slot while bowlers tired was so obviously the tactic required. Having not done that in the moment, they then had the overnight to re-think and didn't.

It would be nice if the game goes to a full five days play - could be the greatest fourth innings run chase ever :). More likely all over by 6pm today. Either way we will need to address our short comings before Headingley on Thursday in order to win the last three tests. Anderson is no longer good enough, we need genuine pace of Wood, a proper wicket keeper in Foakes and stop pretending that Stokes is still an all rounder and start picking a bowling attack that is balanced accordingly. Hopefully with the knowledge that the bowlers can take 20 wickets, this will make our batters a bit more measured in their approach as I believe we can post some big totals.

I'll come back to the pitch, it's just too benign, which helped to gloss over England's deficiencies with the bat for a while but it's made it very tough for our bowlers. The Australians have the edge with the extra pace and bounce. Putting them in and watching them rack a total was not part of the plan and I'm sure this kind of pitch wouldn't have been the request. Perhaps both of the ground staffs have been fighting the weather, I don't know. There are 3 tests to fit in too before the end of this month so they are going to need to give some consideration to the attack. I agree with your point about Stokes, Spaggons.

Our batting has been dafter than their bowling has been good. We lost that battle. And then when we bowled, the Australians shocked everyone by playing test cricket.
Poor Brits...discovering 'the crims' have more brain and therefore better cricket tactics than the Brits. Must be hard swallow.
I'm reminded or Eddie Jones' spell as England's Rugby coach. Start fast and use 'finishers' to hit hard when the opposition tires at the end.
Great for the first time we played any opposition, but worked out much faster and catered for by the rest of the world, so that our plan B and C and D were....non existent. Well someone did say the players were allowed to make it up for themselves.

And then of course the small matter of having an international team with world class players. Lot's of them, not just one or two. That helps too.

I think the team selection needs to try and cover all the pitch options. Over 5 days the pitch changes and picking a team of trundlers with no spinner because it looks like a green top is asking for trouble.

Another big issue which seems to get forgotten is the loss of Stokes as a bowler, he balanced the attack and we're missing him big time

I think Wood would probably have been selected if he'd been ready. England look pretty thin on the ground when it comes to fit bowlers...

That Brook wicket. With his ruddy MLB sticker in his bat. I can't get it out of my head.. I have never seen -anything- so abysmal in a cricket match, from a Lord's Ashes test to village cricket. Never. Not even a no.11 & this twunt is a 'batting specialist'. What on earth those who'd spent £180 for 2 tickets thought watching that.

Did you see GeoffreyB's reaction watching on-?! And you didn't feel the very same-?

Bazball has imploded. Today we lose the Ashes, & we deserve it. There's no point blaming any other factors, like a benign pitch or even that they're 'just a better team'; this is just making excuses for the bleedingly obvious atrocious bazball reasons I've been harping on about since that ridiculously arrogant/ naiive declaration which lost us the first Test.
