Any damage would be minimal, a lot more environmentally friendly than having a harrier ditching in the sea.

Agree. Remaining fuel, hydraulic fluids, oils etc. would be a disaster if the aircraft ditched. Even if not recovered....it did say these were inert practice bombs they will get grown over with sea life in time. Sounds like a damage limitation was done. Still not good but better than the alternative.

Just lumps of steel or steel cases filled with concrete so no damage. In fact, the coral will very quickly grow over them.
