..but perhaps a bit out of your patch Tony. Just back from hols in Scotland and found Market Brae Music in Inverness. Newly opened last October selling a50/50 split between CD and Vinyl (all second hand, decent prices). Got me some Nico, Buzzcocks, Kraftwerk, Monochrome Set and The Planet Wilson (10 points for anyone who recognises the latter).

I wish them the best of luck I really do, in Salisbury there is one established shop 'Stand Out' who are always struggling, all other new comers have been and gone in the last decade.

Its a shame but the interweb won and thats the end of it.

I was after TNT Tortoise the other week and looked in Stand Out. It was not there so I asked the assistant who I know to talk too. She said it was not in stock but she could order it and it would take two weeks. I said I would check eBay and she told me to **** off (with a wry smile) But this is the way of things.

Relics Records have been supplying a vast range of second hand CD's and Lp's for a good many years. They have now opened another store in Leeds close to the Corn Exchange. From what I can gather they are stocking similar product at both shops.

Great Jazz section many ECM Lp's on the shelf plus all the other labels too many to mention but I guess I have bought about 100 Lp's and CD's from them in the past without any faulty ones, however they offer a money back guarantee

The web has it's place for people who live in remote areas or who are infirmed but nothing beats the face to face banter and the pleasure of finding something out of the ordinary. Today I found Vol 1-2 Holy Modal Rounders albums mint under -h- in rock

I claim the 10 point for hearing of and knowing about The Planet Wilson.

I feel a business trip to Inverness and Leeds coming on.......

iGary, It was a shame that Avid in Salisbury closed down - I used to get a stack of stuff in there. (I already have the Tortoise - TNT) The Avid in Oxford has shut the Dance basement, and is now ticking along waiting for the leaseowner to take the site back.

The Stand Out in Salisbury usually yielded 6 - 10 disks to purchase - I remember them having a strong selection of Kai Triacid the last time I looked.

However the Stand Out in Bournemouth went years ago, as did some other vinyl shops up Christchurch Road. I picked up a crate of Noom records in their last weeks.

After all that bad news, the good news is that the Avid in Bournemouth is still going strong, and I hope to partake tomorrow if I get time off for good behaviour.

Vinyl Frontier in Oxford (Cowley Rd) is in the process of closing down (everything now half price), and Polar Bear (new and 2nd-hand CDs) went at new year. So let's hope Avid stays on ...

I don't think Oxford is remote, but the reason they give for closure always begins with i or e.

Irritation / Ennui ?

Inflation / Expenses ?

Investigation / Examinations ?

Ah....

Perhaps you mean Teh Internets and E-Baying ?

Ricky,

I cite the LP - Not Drowning but waving, which I think is buried under 4 boxes of records in the room under the stairs. Spiky indie guitar pop/rock from the North - are you connected?

Nice one. This one is the first album In The Best Of All Possible Worlds. They were a Hull band (remnants of the Red Guitars)- drummer played in my old band briefly years and years ago. 10 points are yours - bonus points if you dig the album out!

Cheers

I think the internet and ebay does pose a real problem to retailers and no they cannot compete like for like. I believe they need to re think how the opperate and offer a much more specialist service to us buyers. Relics in Leeds have done just that and are reporting sales growth, in fact so much so that they have added another shop

Salisbury used to be great for records, two excellent S/H stall style places in covered markets, run by George and Doug, specialising in Jazz and Rock respectively and Domino Records. I've still got a lot of stuff in my collection that I bought from Stand Out. The clothes Colin sells there are very entertaining.

I suppose this is one for Tony. Whilst I imagine that most people who are interested in audio on this site have vinyl as their primary source and that reflects why most of the stuff for sale on PFM is vinyl, another reason is that it's probably impossible to buy CDs cheap enough to sell on and at a price that is better then elsewhere.
Tony's other selling point on vinyl is quality, something which on CD is relatively easier to maintain.

That's exactly it - I find it hard to compete on CDs as so many can be found new for a fiver or so. Vinyl is almost always deleted so has a second hand value.

Tony.

Hi kenneth cooke

Whereabouts exactly is the new Relics shop, I went in to Leeds this morning but could not find it. I walked all around the corn exchange and into call lane but still did'nt see it. I know where the main shop is at the top of briggate. Can you help?

I have not been to their new shop near Corn Exchange but it sounds as though must have been very close. I usual frequent theri Briggate shop which is right opposite the Grand theatre. I think maybe the Briggate shop has a larger volumn of specialist stuff

Drove past avid last night, big sign in the window, closing down end of May :(
I'll try to pop by soon and find out what's happening i.e. are they moving premises?

Sad news but looking round Amazon for instance today good quality vinyls such as Deadly Avenger's Deep Red are going for £2 for two slabs of vinyl how does a shop hope to compete?

Operations like these were doomed with the internet. The next rung up are consumer electronics, many have felt the pinch.

Fopp seem to have got the idea, good spread (Even in Andover) good selection and good price, well cheap enough for someone like me to say **** it I will buy that.

The days of £16.99 cds are long gone, Virgin only survive (surely) from other areas of the business.

I expect Avid in Oxford to shut any minute, but not that one in Bournemouth!

Bugger, there aren't many other places to go in that area, a couple of diggers in Poole and a couple in Boscombe, but none stock the breadth of the Avid selection of Rock, Pop, Indie and dance.

Not good. Bloody internet!

Just got back from my shopping trip to Avid Bournemouth - definitely closing end of May, not relocating.
Avid Oxford will close by the end of 2007.
Avid will continue selling on the internet via Netsounds, Gemm etc. but there will no longer be a physical store presence.
A great shame. I wished the store manager all the best.
Visit http://www.avidrecords-uk.com/ (works in IE but not in Firefox)

Not good - I willl have to go to Boscombe instead, but they won't have such a depth.

I suppose the stock will go to a warehouse and be Gemm'd as you say.
