After toying with the the idea of trying some valve kit for quite a while, I now have a Conrad Johnson PV10 on loan from a friend. My own amp is a Nait 5i.
I tried to running the CJ into the Nait's AV input with unity gain enabled but I couldn't turn the CJ's volume control more than a couple of degrees without the volume being overwhelmingly loud. Am I making some kind stupid mistake here or is there an inherent mismatch between the gain of the CJ and the Nait?
In the meantime, I'm using the CJ as a phono stage by taking the tape out into an input on the Nait. It's nowhere near as detailed or punchy as my modified 522 cards but, oh man, it's so lush and holographic (holophonic?).
