computer music server

The really nice thing about this threads is the number of options posted.

Mostly free and recommended on good faith.

Some new to me like WTFPLAY.

I'm going to try that when I have some time.

But plenty to try Dave and little cost involved.

No it's not.

And there-in can lie the problem.

Stating that one thing is better than another as a fact can be a little problematic.

Which is why I usually use IMHO because it's just my take.

Others will differ.

I have the IQ and Hifiberry pro DACs and for the cash they can sound pretty persuasive.

Some love the IQ and that's fair enough.

The IQ and the Berry are not expensive so easy to try.:)

But my personal preference is for my USB DAC but that may change once I try a linear supply on the PI (on order).

I think that the PI is a darn fine piece of kit which makes serving and steaming available to most people.

I've been pretty impressed with the sound from my 3's as server (Minimserver) and render (moode).

But it's ONLY one honest opinion amongst many.

Ears need to decide for themselves.

Hello Guys,

Let me post my modest contribution .

Here is my setup :

- Nas Synology DS214
http://www.synology.com
The server stores digital files
- Raspberry Pi 3
https://www.raspberrypi.org/
The mini computer enables decoding audio & video files
- Hifiberry Dac + pro
https://www.hifiberry.com/dacplus/
The module allows conversion of audio files to 192kHz / 24bit with analog output
- Case for Raspberry + Hifiberry
https://www.hifiberry.com/product/steel-case-for-hifiberry-dac-brushed-cover-2/

This media computer use analog output to give signal in Hi-fi installation.

I think this is a good deal for cheap.

Best regards.

Nicolas

What software do you run on the NAS? Are you using logitech LMS?

I'm not using NAS software...like ds audio or ds video.
Media files are only indexing on the NAS.

And I'm using OSMC (Open Source Media Center) which provide audio and video decoding.

There are Samba or NFS mounting to access media files.

But, you can use Volumio for a better audiophile experience.

I've been working on an all in one, stuffing a Pi and DAC in a shoebox size amp. For my two penneth I'd definitely try a Pi. I've used Rune, Volumio and now Moode for the OS. It's devilishly simple to set up.

I've tried the HifiBerry Dac+Pro and IQaudio Dac+ preferring the IQaudio though I'm not sure I ever got the clock sync working on the HiFiBerry. I may go back and explore that.

Pi3 + DAC + Fast 8Gb SD card + power supply would set you back under a ton and it's pretty much plug and play. Having a decent fast SD card is key to minimising dropouts. The Pi3 even works with its built in WiFi on my network so no need for a USB WiFi Dongle. Lots of tweaks in the Moode software available and Tim is very responsive on it's development over on DIYaudio.

If you're near me you welcome to have a listen.
