Cleaning CDs

Not the playing surface, the label side.

I now have a couple of fairly old double CD boxed sets which had a small piece of foam packing on top of the discs (They don`t seem to bother with this anymore). This foam has rotted and turned into hard goo stuck to the CD. I have scraped most of it off with a fingernail but am left with the remainder which is impervious to soapy water and I am reluctant to try a solvent as I don`t want risk damage to the label or worse.

Any ideas how to clean the goo off - the CDs still play perfectly.

As I write this the idea of citrus cleaner occurs, I may go and try it.

Chances are it won’t come off. The foam causes a chemical reaction and fuses into the label area. I’ve seen many lovely early full-silver DGG, Decca etc boxes damaged here. I did actually start a thread in the music room ages ago suggesting folk go through their collection removing all foam from both vinyl box sets and CDs. It is just hideous stuff.
