Come on, write in with a couple of lines from a song close to your heart, one that you swear is better written than anything else on the planet. One of those desert island records. It can be anything, popular, isoteric whatever.
<br>
''Things aren't clear they're just transparent, the trick of the trade is do make them apparent''

I said "I'm so happy I could die", she said "drop dead" then left with another guy,

Cheers

'My uncle Charlie is a cynical man, and his wife's a touch sceptical too.
They've got one of those stickers in the back of their car says 'We've seen the prices at the zoo'

'Dragging my guitar through maternity wards
I was in search of the umbilical chord'

"I knew an old woman ran a doughnut shop
She worked late, serving cops

Then one morning, her heart stopped,
Place aint the same no more."

" I am angry, I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin
My irritability keeps me alive and kicking
I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me one bit
I know beauty and I know a good thing when I see it"

What are terics? If they are good, I'll have the same as you, so we can be isoteric.

"I was looking for a job and then I found a job and heaven knows I'm miserable now".

This is usually my answer if someone, in an ice-breaking type effort, asks what is my "karaoke song"? [Cue another thread].

A Song From Under The Floorboards - classic!

'No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn' =='Wow'

and : 'When the still sea conspires an armour, and her solemn and aborted currents breed tiny monsters, True Sailing* is dead. == 'Wow +++***

* I take this to mean you cannot maintain a true heading in a becalmed vessel.

*** Boy did I do some research to find out what that meant.

Tom Lehrer's description of US foreign policy to this day, written in 1964:

For might makes right, and till they've seen the light
They've got to be protected, all their rights respected
Until someone we like can be elected.

("Send the Marines")

I picked up two Tom Lehrer albums in Tunbridge Wells in 1978, where they had sat, mint and undisturbed, for many years. Nice to see another fan.

The CD set "The remains of Tom Lehrer" has everything he ever recorded (several times in some cases!).

Another worth considering is the complete CD box set of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. Flanders's lyrics in "Madeira, m'dear" are marvellous

And he said as he hastened to put out the cat,
The wine, his cigar and the lamps:...

Unaware of the wiles of the snake in the grass
And the fate of the maiden who topes,
She lowered her standards by raising her glass,
Her courage, her eyes and his hopes...

When he said, "What the devil?" she made no reply,
Up her mind and a dash for the door

But February made me shiver
with every postcard I delivered.
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step.

I don't remember if I cried
when I heard about his widowed bride
but something touched me deep inside
the day the music died

A few random beauts. from Lehrer:

"'Vunce ze rockets go up, who cares vere zey come down,
Zat's not my department,' says Wernher von Braun."

and

"You too can be a big hero
If you can count backwards to zero.
'In German oder Englisch I know how to count down,
Und I'm learning Chinese', says Wernher von Braun."

("Wernher von Braun")

"Don't solicit for your sister, that's not nice,
Unless you get a good percentage of her price."

("Be prepared")

"Our captain has a handicap to cope with, sad to tell.
He's from Georgia, and he doesn't speak the language very well."

("It Makes A Fellow Proud To Be A Soldier")

"Get in line in that processional, step into that small confessional.
There the guy who's got religion'll tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer, drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight - Time to transubstantiate!"

("The Vatican Rag")

...among many others. Of course, with Lehrer, a lot of the fun was in the inter-song patter on the live records. I particularly liked the line about Dr. Samuel Gall (inventor of the gall bladder, one of America's 10 favourite organs!) who, in college, had originally "majored in animal husbandry........until they caught him at it."

Here's another, much more recent favourite of mine:

"Is he lying to get what he wants or does he mean it this time?
Is he running low on affection, and beer and dope,
And an ironing board, and an unpaid analyst who shags?"

(The Bevis Frond, "He'd Be A Diamond")

:D;)

She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black.

If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
Ill examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
Im your man

"I love a good bum on a woman it makes my day
To me it is proof of God's existence, a posteriori"

Jake Thackray - 'On Again, On Again'

Cast your mind back ten years
To the girl who's next to me in school
If I put me hand upon her leg
She hit me with a rule
