As I recall they're bootlegs in all but name. Some sort of legal loophole with old recordings I think. But for the price.....

bugger, hence the price then. Is this type of material out of copyright?

Yes, but ole Chet died a long time ago, so no-one you're likely to care about is getting ripped off. Still I wouldn't be hopeful that these CDs will sound much good.
