Celef monitor 1

Fitnessed

Heard a set of celef monitor1ran by a quad 33/303, what a sweet sounding set up.
Had a quick look and can be had for £200 on the eBay.

I'm still surprised by the performance on my Quad serviced 303 when used with matching speakers (not difficult ones and not low ohms)
No experience with 33 but Celef was a great sub brand under Tylers Proac company.

Celef are great speakers, I have a pair of Domestic Monitor 2 that sound lovely and are happy with the amp turned up, too.

@boegelund Celef* was the original hifi speaker company of Stewart Tyler (RIP), and ProAc** was formed later to specialise in speakers for studios etc, both names/companies ran together for several years until the Celef name was dropped and all products came under the ProAc name.

*Celef was so named because the first speakers made by Stewart had Celestion and KEF drivers.
**ProAc is derived from Professional Accoustics

I had a pair of Celef Monitors in the ‘70s, only sold them as I then had enough money to
buy Spendor BC1s.
I refurbished a pair of Monitors a few years ago and was very pleased with how they sounded.

what is the biggest celef produced

is there anything like chartwell PM-400 just better...

I remember a Studio Pro model from back in the day and there was also the RT1 with a horn with a bass driver below and a mid driver above. ( There were a pair on eBay years back but no longer show up in a search).

Found a pair on YouTube!

There may also have been one with an ATC bass driver under the Celef ( found it, it was the RT1) name before the Proac EBS came out but little on the web so far.

Must admit a pair of Proac Studio 3 with the straw port would be nice to hear, still fetching big bucks though!

There were a few Celef models that used various drivers using the same enclosures -
SPT - studio professional transducer (a few dozen produced)
RT 1 - ribbon tweeter (probably the pinnacle of the Celef range - would love to own a pair of these - only a few produced)
REF - similar to SPT but with different bass drivers and the addition of a super tweeter ( I own these. Possibly a one off commissioned for a special event, but history unknown)
All used a 30" X 13.5" X 15" cabinet with a separate enclosure for the midrange which was at the top on all three models, and all TOTL bespoke designs made by Stewart himself.

I remember hearing the smaller Celef speakers back in the late 70’s and I really liked the way Stewart voiced them. I picked up a pair of PE1 loudspeakers maybe five years back and again they have something that just appeals to me, I think his use of the straw ports and the Kef drivers give the bass a certain ‘feel’.
The early Proacs had something about them as well.

I think you’re correct about the straws in the port having a particular effect on the bass.
My Celef Monitors certainly had very tight, but subjectively deep, bass.
I certainly preferred it to the bass end with my Monitor Audio MA5s.
Both used the Kef B200 bass/mid. driver.

Celef Studio Professional Transducer...

I did own a pair of these, they came in their original cartons in 1978, lovely music reproducers.

I sometimes do miss hearing them, and those times, late 1970s.
My favourite Celef, used a pair for a couple of years and added a Piezo super tweeter to give more air and space.

I wrote the leaflets and the reviews sometimes adding 'technical' terms such as "SUT bass unit" and "AEPC" for other reviewers at the time to copy in the mags but of course they were fictional. Studio Professional Transducer was invented to use Stewart Paul Tyler's initials.

Good ol' days.

The largest was unnamed but used a pair of Quad ESL57 sat atop bass bins using ATC bass drivers and a Piezo HF added to the centre of the Quad panels. Only a handful of these sold because of the difficulty in obtaining ESL57s and shipping finished speakers. Sold locally only. I sold one pair.

Then there was the Celefane.........

MA5had SP1014 (small magnet, medium Q) in a sealed enclosure that was pushing the maximum recommended enclosure size (KEF suggested 20 - 30l), whereas, the reflex ported Celef Monitor would have necessarily had one of the large magnet variants.

I've owned 2 pairs of the RT-1's. Serial numbers 0011 and 12, and 021 and 022 as far as I recall. I think Stewart only made about a dozen pairs of these. ATC Studio bass unit, KEF large magnet B200 in an open backed section for midrange, and the Decca Kelly DK30 for treble. I still have one fully working pair. As well as all the component parts from the second pair. Properly balanced speakers. By far the best treble I have EVER heard, including ATCs, Sonus Faber and Focals. With one pair, at one point, I removed the crossovers, built an external active Elektor 3-way crossover, and used it with 3 sets of Leak valve amps (2x TL10, 2 x Stereo20), and also tried it with 2 pairs of Stereo20 valve amps and a Naim NAP160 for bass. Fantastic in all cases. This was in a 20ft square room. I now have huge ATC active SCM150ASLTs with Townshend Supertweeters but these particular Celefs gave me just as much clout, finesse and enjoyment for nearly 30 years.
