CD way too LOUD!!

I've just ditched the naim variable input boards from the 'cd' input of my Naim 72. Massive improvement, but the CD level is way louder than all other inputs. I'm sure most of you have heard all this before, so could someone give an absolute diy beginner any clues?
Neil McBrides site says that the phono stage gain can easily be doubled and the output stage gain halved. I can see what he means in the schematics, but have no idea how this translates to the pcb .
or would a resistor in place of the variable boards be just as good/better?
any help most welcome,
thanks,
Clayton
