Cartridge running in

Just got a new DV XX2 mk 2. Its a cartridge I know well, having run one before.

It is initially sounding quite unimpressive, which is how I remember my previous one at the beginning.

Why do some cartridges sound quite poor when new and change so dramatically? And how long to run in - I remember my last one taking ages.

I think it is mostly the suspension settling. The exact situation exists when you buy a new car, it just settles much quicker in the case of a car as the forces are much higher.

Thanks Kuma; can you give me an explanation of why? and what are the characterisitics you would expect of a not-run-in cartridge?
