Yes it's terrifying. Unfortunately I have experience closer to home, my father-in-law is completely hooked on all this guff. He's bought into literally every conspiracy theory going:- twin towers, alien abduction, Maddie McCann, Trump, Plandemic, climate science denial, all of it. He's anti-vax which is a huge concern given his situation:- age 77, obese, high blood pressure and COPD sufferer!
Problem is you can't reason him out of these beliefs as it's not reason that's got him there in the first place. I really believe that some kind of mental illness is at play here.
Hmm...Boxing Day will be fun
Social media is at least 50% to blame, you can pick and choose your news sources so all you see is one big circle jerk of nutjobbery 24/7.
It then becomes 'us and them' and there's no backing down from that, they'll defend their team with their dying breath.
One could argue that mainstream censorship actually pushes them ever-further away from rationality.
They’ve been booted off the mainstream platforms to a large degree, even their saviour Trump was hoofed off Facebook, Twitter etc. That obviously moves them onto the real echo chambers; platforms they have created/financed themselves, or pre-existing conspiracy sites etc. One could argue that mainstream censorship actually pushes them ever-further away from rationality.
I hear that some nut jobs believe in a conspiracy that the world was created by a bloke in 5 days. Good God.
