Bullsh** claims by manufacturers? - share your best ones.....

The 303 has an output capacitor that will audibly affect deep bass.
The 405 mk1 used a poor opamp, had the dumper crossover too wide and intrusive SOA protection

All a little compromised

I was always amused that Peter Walker and David Hafler were both claiming that all properly designed amplifiers sound the same, around the same time, yet Quad amps and Hafler amps don't sound very similar at all.

What's missing from "properly designed" is "and used within their limits".

For example, a lot of well designed amplifiers might exceed their limits on output current if faced with driving one-ohm Apogee Scintillas. Most amplifiers have current limiting to reduce failure rates in the field from such very difficult loads. If you go into current limiting (or into voltage clipping) all bets on transparency are off.

Using the special case of Apogees (or similar oddball loads) doesn't really help. Implicit in the definition of 'properly designed' is an ability to cope with the normal range of loads presented by domestic speakers at normal listening levels. This does place some responsibility on the purchaser to specify an amp capable of driving a typical speaker at the sort of levels they prefer, but within reason, most 'should' do so without complaint or misbehaviour. In theory.

Given that Quad and Hafler are both competent designs, yet they sound different in many common settings, this does rather give the lie to the notion, and supports Yank's contention.

You could always try it, and report back on your results...
Without wishing to pre-empt any findings I predict the following:

plain paper will sound neutral;
tracing paper will be a bit more transparent;
the Daily Mail will be a bit strident and shouty;
the FT will be very detailed and authoritative, but lack the 'boogie factor'
toilet paper will sound 5h1t

I was about to buy a large printing press. Still negotiating with the salesman.

"This press will bring work in on its own"

Yeah right mate
