Presumably there will be remnants of alternator belt trapped in and around the timing belt? This would prove your case - the breakdown patrol should have seen it.

That won't establish when bits of the alternator belt found their way into the timing belt. It is more likely it happened when the alternator belt first failed.
 
Hmm, the local expert didn’t sound very favourable, proving when it happened being the issue. Chasing a resolution will take time and money we’re short of.

Feels like it’s gonna be a hard suck-up.

The next dilemma repair or engine swaps.
 
Time for a boroscope. It could be as little as bent valves, or as much as bent valves, damaged guides, head and pistons, in which case a crate engine might be a cheaper option.
