Bluetooth in ear headphones....recomendations

madmike

I feel much better now, I really do...
Could do with some in ear headphones to listen to stuff from my phone when on the train...any ideas?
Probably lots out there, but which are the good ones?

I bought a pair of B&W P13s at Xmas, and so far I am impressed. First 2 way active BT IEMs. £169

Build quality and materials are good. BT pairing is very good - better than most of the numerous BT devices I already have, and you can pair to multiple devices. All major BT protocols, including HD supported.

They are comfy to wear, neck band controls (vol, track, phone answer etc) simple and effective. Discreet to wear too.

Sound quality is very good for my tastes, very B&W in house sound - smoother end of spectrum, but great sound stage and still exciting.

I see they are on offer TODAY at hifonix for £118. That's a bargain -annoying I paid full price!!!

I also have PX7s over ears and Shure SE846s, and these compare vary favorably in terms of fun, SQ and VFM.

I wanted a pair without any connecting headband or wire, and able to sit securely in my ears for the gym. Jabra Elite active something or others. You do need to get a good fit with the correct size silicone tips for the right sound, and they sort of twist lock into your ear. I compared with my son's original Apple airpods and there was nothing in it, but they're not a patch on a set of cans.

.

Just went and bought an extra pair given the 30% off deal. Sure they'll come in handy..

I can also recommend Apple Airpods Pro. I got some for Christmas and they are excellent. Plenty of charge in the box and when that runs out, just charge the box again. Very quick charging in all aspects. There are three settings: Noise Cancellation on/Noise Cancellation Transparency/Noise Cancellation off. When it's on and even if nothing is being played, they really block out all noise and with music/radio playing you hear nothing but the music. Transparency means you can hear some background noise but it's not intrusive. I am very pleased with them. They will work with Android but there are limitations.

Trouble with AirPods is lack of lossless HD codec support. No aptx etc.

Soundpeats True Wireless

Astonishingly good for the money. In fact they are do good that six or seven friends have ended up buying them and all are happy.

I'd avoid the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless. I got them to replace my Momentum Free and I haven't been very satisfied. Multiple issues when connecting to the phone, frequent connection drop for one of the two earbuds, crappy firmware (eg no way to turn them off when in the charging case) but a really nice sound. However I think I'd go for the Sony WF1000XM3 if I was in the market for in ear headphones right now (I have the WH-1000XM3 as well which are excellent).

edit: Just realized that you don't want separate in ear headphones necessarily in which case I was really happy with the Momentum Free and they're currently on offer on Amazon.

What phone? I have a pair of the latest Airpod Pros, and the noise cancellation is very good. Sound fine to these ears too.

I got a pair a fortnight ago - very pleased with them too. I bought the original AirPods a couple of years ago and they’re ok in quiet surroundings but not so good on public transport. The Pros, however, are excellent everywhere.
Love the ‘ear tip fit check’ thingy too!

Serious question from the ignorant: what does that mean to a layman like me?

Easy: no HD hi res tracks with Apple. Only compressed stuff, which is ok, but far from best quality. Bluetooth aptx is what the rest use. Apple, as ever, plough their own furrow.

I bought some Jaybird Vistas just after they launched for use at the gym so IPX7 rating mattered, noise cancelling not so much. They actually sound great, go decently loud and sound really balanced across the frequency range. Importantly they also stay in place really well, I've never had an issue with fit (and they have 3 different size earpieces included so you can tailor). Initial early teething issues with the sound 'wandering' left-right a bit but fixed after a firmware update and now I'd firmly recommend them. They also do last the ~6 hours they claim on a single charge.

I have a pair of MA650 from the Glasgow based manufacturer RHA ... not bad at all and very light and comfy to wear.
What I've found is that the choice of bud size but also the material is crucial - I was quite gobsmacked by how much difference it can make to be honest.
They also make Planar models that have got me inquisitive - bit too pricey though.

Currently waiting for a pair of Nuraphone IEMs that I signed up to months ago - mad technology that adjusts to your hearing o_O
Problem is they keep moving the final delivery date a month at a time - which is beginning to boil my piss somewhat ...

Samsung Galaxy Buds, especially if you have an Android phone.
Flat, no boom n tizz. Most online reviews are lackluster... because the consumer market expects boom n tizz.

Come with a variety of tips and wings so they sit very firmly in the ear and give a good seal.

Small for BT in-ears.

Been using Jabra Elite Sport for a year and very happy with them. Mainly gym where they keep out a lot of the external music and noise and sound ok. Different expectations to over-ear headphones at home in a quiet room.
