Best live albums

A few selections I go back to the most,

Grand Funk Live Album - one of the few where the crowd noise adds to the listening experience
Friday Night in San Francisco - McLaughlin, di Meola & de Lucia
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Live at Hollywood High School
Howlin' Wolf - London Sessions
Ramones - It's Alive
Emmylou Harris - Spyboy
Steve Hillage - Live in Concert
John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard
Orbital - at Glastonbury
Rammstein - Live au Berlin

There are so many Zappa live albums that it is hard to know where to start but Fillmore East 1971 captures that version of the band, even if the humour is a bit childish, and frankly offensive. But the playing is really good, and the final version of "Happy Together" is completely deranged, if note perfect.

These three would be my recommendations.

Of those not mentioned (but discussed in vinyl releases), all the recent Can offerings and, since one of them is Paris, it reminded me I also like Stomu Yamashta’s Go - Live in Paris.
Good choice.
Particularly the solo on Crossing the Line.
Often assumed it's Al di Meola , but it's Pat Thrall !

Good to see a fellow Grand Funk follower.
I grew up near the USA , have all their albums. but when I got back to the UK, realised they were hated here.

Thanks for the recommendations in this thread.
Have bought used vinyl copies of both the Average White Band and 10cc live albums and have enjoyed both immensely.

I wouldn't say "hated", I would say "of little interest".

In the same category as Foghat, Triumph, REO Speedwagon, etc.

Live at the Apollo Volume III. Amazing, but the moment he snaps into ‘Bewildered’ is the high point.

Kate Bush - Before The Dawn
Billy Idol - VH1 Storytellers
Talk Talk - Live London 86
U2 - Under a blood red sky
War On Drugs - Live Drugs
Page and Plant - No Quarter
Marillion - Thieving Magpie
Genesis - 3 sides Live
The Cure - Cureation
The Cult - Live Cult

Dunno if this counts. Woodstock, back to the garden, The complete concert. 38 CDs, limited edition of 1969, a few thousand bucks if you can find a copy.

Fabulous sound quality and loads of stuff I hadn’t heard before. The full Joan Baez set, in particular, is transcendental.

Edit: of the lesser known sets, Keef Hartley is cracking.

Hendrix and Otis Redding Live at Monterey, bought this from the US in '73 while a student, sent a postal order for it. Blistering performances from both. Slightly disappointed to find its not worth a fortune these days.
