Took about 10 mins to fix. Was exactly as Allthingsanalog suggested. The volume control was dirty. I opened the control up & cleaned the track & all is well again.
A few picts of Arcam internals at link below. In case anyone else needs to do this:
1. Remove 3 screws from cover at each side plus 3 more at rear & remove cover.
2. remove 5? (shiny coloured ones) screws along top of facia
3. remove 5 black screws along underside of facia
4. pull facia away be careful of the various connectors. I got away with removing just the power connector at the top & the ribbon cable to the main board.
5. remove the 4 screws holding the miniature volume control board behind the RHS of the facia. Pull the volume control knob off & undo the retaining nut.
6. disconnect the volume control & remove.
Clean the control as per the youtube link in earlier post. Just bend back the 4 small tags & the control comes apart.
