OK. You must have a few setting wrong here.

have you added the iPhone as a remote on the ATV?
Have you Sync'd any ALACs to the ATV yet?

Yes I've synced all my music files and some video to ATV. But I've not managed to add the iPhone as a remote.

Have you added it to the ATV via the sync command where you have to input a 4 digit code? This is in the add remote bit....IIRC

No doubt something very basic I've missed.

Yes. I use an ATV1 both with the Remote app on an iPhone (TV off) and with its own hardware remote (tiny white thing, using the TV as a monitor).

I don't recall anything that made this in any way difficult but I'll go through the settings tomorrow.

Hallelujah! I'd forgotten to reprogramme the auxiliary input on my Naim pre-amp to the RCA connection for my DAC. So nothing to do with ATV.
Now listening to Janet Baker on Radio 4. Thanks for your suggestions.
