Alain Tanner RIP

Jonah... and Messidor were classics of my 70s film-going education. I think I saw them both at the old Leeds Playhouse. RIP Alain.

I know I saw Jonah back in the mid-70s, and that it was quite a big deal for us art-house types. Much to my horror, I don't recall a single frame of it now. But thank you Alain, I know it made an impact on young Marchbanks back then.

I remember 'Dans la ville blanche', filmed in Lisbon with Bruno Ganz (of Hitler's 'Downfall' fame). I found it unbelievably boring at the time, but I love it today. Great actor.

Happy to see Alain Tanner has left a mark outside Switzerland, the Seventies were a great time for independent cinema.
