Advice required on cheap car - to £1,500

Thanks for all the suggestions and points raised, especially on insurance.
Luckily, no 1 son works for Admiral Insurance so I'll give him a ring on the weekend.

First of all Kudos to you and your wife for giving shelter to a family fleeing the war in Ukraine. I would check if they are entitled to free bus passes for travel within your area. What a fantastic gift though. Alongside a Ford you could also look at older Volkswagens, they're usually well built and reliable. I hope this venture goes well for you and the family you're going to shelter :)

Once you have worked out the up front and annual costs plus expected milage you might find an account with a local taxi company will provide your needs.

We did this when my wife couldn't drive due to a hip op (twice) and had an account paid off monthly. I no longer drive due to poor eyesight. It was also used by our youngest to get home late at night when it was raining.

I've just read this again. If it's a mile and a half to town, that's half an hour on foot. It's summer and everyone concerned is over 12. Shanks's pony isn't such a bad situation, it's half an hour each way. A bike would be a bloody good idea too, and I bet that you can get one for next to nothing. Or indeed nothing, talk to local charities, church groups, etc.

having spent a small fortune on an old VW golf as parts so expensive , i might stick to Ford . but bus pass might be cheaper and less stressful

Vauxhall Astra is also a good choice. Unloved, totally out of fashion, dirt cheap and generally reliable. Dirt cheap bits and service. I bet one of their Ukrainian friends can twirl a spanner if necessary.

08 plate focus here with 85k on the clock, my last one reached over 225k. Very little to go on them beyond the usual tail and arch rust.
I have a 2010 Focus I bought in 2013, 92,000 miles at the moment and I’m doing only ~5,000 miles pa nowadays.

Other than tyres all it’s needed is a new fan belt when it snapped on the, M5 though it currently has a defunct aircon.

Very reliable and cheap to run same as our previous Focus, Escort, Fiesta etc.

Focus 1.6 petrol is the way to go. Had mine over 13 years, added 176,000 miles on it, still going, never let me down (at least in a way that it would not get home).

My Citreon Picasso3 would have suited you. It got £750 PX but was a mere 80k with full mot, two new tyres/discs/pads and a new clutch.

Only another 70 or 80k to go until it starts to be fairly worn out then. Have you got another 13 or 14 years to wait?

Just remembered I let my lovely old Saab go last year
If I need a car I borrow the boss's, about 3-4 times this year
Bike is my transport
