1980 and NWOBHM

I used to pal about with one of the people who were in a band called Savage. They had one or two albums out, and Sounds once said that my mate had too much of a beer gut to make it.

Blimey, this thread takes me back;the most memorable gig i went to back then was Motorhead/Saxon at the Cambridge corn exchange, definately haven't been the same since :D ,other bands seen live around then included Rush,Whitesnake,Gillan,Scorpions,Rainbow(notably wembley arena with Graham Bonnett when Ritchie copt a strop and cut short the set setting off the launching of seats onto the stage)and many very, very bad support acts(whose names have thankfully been forgotten).
Barry.

Remember how record inner sleeves used to have a skull and cross-bones made from a cassette with the legend -

"Home taping is killing music".

One of the best laughs of the era was that Venom used to add

"and so are Venom". Tee Hee

class thread . Growing up in NI during the troubles , it was a bit hard to get to see decent bands (few wanted to come here , such was the media hype) instead we got a mixture of the odd consumate profesional or the truly desperate.

high points were bands like Thin Lizzy , Aerosmith, MSG, Dio

low points ..........queensreigh? supporting Dio at Antrim forum , getting covered in gob and then bottled off the stage for a witty political quip and for thinking he was in Dublin .........they were boddy awfull as well.

ACCEPT ..............PROBABLY THE WORST BAND I HAVE EVER SEEN (and i have seen some shite)

Def lep ..........more like tone deaf leotard.........bunch of poncy satin ****ers

Venom ..............pah ........dont make me laugh there was more venom in a wet sponge.......crap and really loud .........nearly as loud a Hawkwind who always seem crap indoors but when i have seen them at various open air gigs they have been pretty good .

comedy bands .........the MACC LADS .........beer , sex , chips and gravy , fab
Dumpys rusty nuts ..........stalwarts of the brit biking scene for the past 25 yrs at least !
The Golden Hoarde , southern Irish HEADCASES totaly mental and banned from nearly every indoor gig they ever played .......they had a lead guitarist who was a complete nutter , he appeared on stage in a chrome german helmet and skin tight silver strides and nothing else..........they had a line in totally pornographic lyrics and some questionable stage antics with the stripper or female members of the audience .

remembering back to those days makes my last concert experience , great though it was , seem a little staid in comparrison ..........but i think thats got more to do with age perhaps !

bb............searching though the metal pile :D

Venom ..............pah ........dont make me laugh there was more venom in a wet sponge.......crap and really loud

Umm......yes i have to admit their lyrics/music(some) are Shite, but they put the Spark in the fire for Black Metal, they where the originators, if it wasn't for Venom we wouldn't have had bands like Dark Throne,Burzum,Emperor,Mayhem,Gehenna,Marduk etc (no Murders/Church Burnings either(sad but true)).

Ahh! Foreign bands with a good grip of the local political situation.

Excellent, pity I missed them, sounds like real quality...

There were some good times in the eighties!

I remember getting Axe Attack off me Mum & Dad for christmas.
It was downhill from there on I'm afraid...

Still get the NWOBHM vinyl out every now and again... usually when my mates (all now 30 somethings too) come round for a few beers.

Well I'm off to get a curry now, just picked up Iron Maiden's first album from the pile, will slot it in for the 15min drive to the Curry House - Excellent start to the weekend!

NWOBHM?

I thought this was all the ****y thrash metal that emerged in response to punk!

Proper HM was Sabbath, Purple, Judas Priest etc. Iron Maiden, Saxon and stuff was just .... well.... lightweight metal!

Anyway.... Bristol Poly circa 1980-82, bands seen at the Colston Hall;

Hawkwind - their poppie years - OK

Ozzie and his Blizzard of Ozz - good and LOUD!

Black Sabbath - must have been with the poisoned dwarf at that time - but not bad all the same!

Vardis - Vague memory as support to Sabbath - was there really such a band?

AND not metal but perhaps one of the loudest best sounds on offer at the time....
Steve Hackett..........genius!?

I think I even went to see King Crimson at the Granary...mind you the scrumpy from student days does dull the memory a bit!

Cheers

Ant

Nope, the ****y Thrash(as you put it) came about in 83-89(high point was in 86) Slayer,Anthrax,Metallica(Larz reckoned they where never a Thrash band, but thats another story),Death Angel,Sacred Reich,Forbidden etc, influenced via Punk/Crossover bands like D.R.I (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles),Discharge,Circle Jerks,Napalm Death,Intence Degree,D.O.A,H.D.Q (Hung Drawn and Quartered)etc.

Agree with Chaz, NWOBHM was very different to thrash metal. Vardis did exist, first album Quo Vardis, don't remeber seeing them support Sabbath with Dio, saw Sabbath on 1980 (Heaven and Hell) and 1982 (1981?) Mob Rules Tours, but then again I often spent time in the pub when the support act was on!

I think I saw Vardis supporting, but no idea who. I blame the pub...

I thought they were quite good at the time.

Just a thought, but if any of you want to see/hear where Metal is now try Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine.

Even with the lovely Angela Gossow on vocals

.......mind you, you'd never guess it was a Female singing.

I've just flung some decent 80s metal vinyl up in the weekly pfm sale list if anyone's interested.

Tony.

An update to an ancient thread.

Recently purchased the Diamond Head Box Set - The MCA Years, contaings Borrowed Time and Canterbury albums plus Radio 1 sessions, the 1982 Reading Rock Set plus other bonus tracks. The only thing that it's missing (from my failing memory) are the Andy Peebles and Tommy Vance Interviews that were released as B sides (one was on a double single) during that period. A great item (and includes Sucking My Love being renamed Such Is My Love for the BBC!!)

Also a heads up, on Saturday 10pm on Radio 2, there is the second part of a two part series (you can listen to last Saturday's on the iPlayer), on Britsh Heavy Metal. This second show is going to concentrate on NWOBHM and features Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Diamond Head amongst others.

Just for the education of some of us here, what does NWOBHM stand for?
