I got an e-mail this morning from an old schoolfriend, now in Hong Kong. He reminded me of a half term we spent in London when we were 17. Started with King Crimson at the Rainbow (Lark's Tongues), then Peter Hammill solo at the Wigmore Hall (just post Silent Corner and the Empty Stage). After the gig we were asked if we'd be an audience for Teddington filming of Genesis a couple of days later. So we caught a coach from Victoria and sat through take after take of 'I know what I like' and 'Selling England by the Pound'. I don't listen to much prog these days, but it reminded me of quite a remarkable trio of gigs.
At the Rainbow I picked up a copy of ZigZag magazine which introduced me to a far broader church than I had been listening to, preparing me for pub rock, punk and a lifetime of fun.
A good week's break from school.
