    Does analogue ultimately beat digital?

Something to keep in mind that's inherent to digital sampling, is that the higher the frequency, the less information is retained about the shape of the wave. Yes, you can sample a 22.05 kHz wave with a sample rate of 44.1k, but the only information that you're sampling is the amplitude of the...

    Back to the Future

I had a CD3 as my first Naim CD player. I bought it used from a hifi shop that a friend of mine ran, in about 2005. The CD3 was good in the context of a fairly simple system (Nait 5i [original] and a pair of floorstanding JMLabs at the time), but things have also definitely gotten better as...

    Where to upgrade from NAP-150?

Right, there's many variables in this. A couple of relevant things here: my living room absolutely eats high frequencies (and after living with speaker cables from Chord and Witch Hat, only NACA5 has given me satisfactory frequency balance), and my speakers are very efficient (91db...

    Where to upgrade from NAP-150?

Hello PFM community, I a very "source first" system, and that has served me well for several years. For sources, I have: -Naim CDS3 with Teddy Pardo XPS -Well Tempered Versalex with Dynavector 20X2L, Pass Labs Aleph Ono, Well Tempered DPS -Apogee Element 24 (on recording duty as well, for...

    Rehash of 202 vs 82

Hello all, This question has been asked previously, but the rest of my system is different, so I figured I'd seek experienced opinions. Here's my current system: Naim CDS3 with Teddy Pardo XPS Well Tempered Versalex with LDT 2 tonearm and DPS power supply / Dynavector 20X2 L / Pass Labs Aleph...

Proac Tablette 10 Signatures - Naim or tubes?

They are specced at 86 db sensitivity. They are also rated 10 ohms nominal impedance. So the impedance won't be a concern, but you'll need to dump twice as much power into them to get the same volume out as something that has 89 db sensitivity. My current ProAc floorstanders are rated 91 db...

    Vinyl Upgrade

The RP6 is a fine deck with a great tonearm for the price. The biggest leaps forward I've had in terms of your stated sonic priorities of fast, detailed, dynamic sound, have been in terms of swapping out my similarly-priced MM cartridge for a MC (Clearaudio Aurum Beta -> Dynavector 20X2L) and...

Proac Tablette 10 Signatures - Naim or tubes?

I've had 3 sets of ProAcs all connected to my Naim NAP 150. Tablette 2000, Response 2S, and currently the Studio 140 MK. 2. ProAc and Naim are an excellent pairing. ProAc's stand-mounted speakers tend to be very inefficient, and I would feel more comfortable pairing them with solid state...

    DIN-5 cable upgrade recommendations?

Absolutely. Changing racks resulted in a complete disassembly and reassembly of everything.

    DIN-5 cable upgrade recommendations?

I recently moved my stereo into a room where I had to downsize from two racks to one. This meant having to sit my CDS3 outsize of the rack, until I picked up a rack with an additional tier. While that was the case, I was forced to use a Chord Solid 2 RCA-to-DIN cable to connect the CD player's...

The Books - The Lemon of Pink

I was introduced to this album by a friend in 2006. I'm currently listening to a vinyl pressing of a 2016 remaster, and it is without a doubt, one of the most stunning-sounding LPs in my collection. The soundstaging is absolutely wild, the transients are exhilarating, the variety of textures...

The Worst Sounding Piece of Kit You've owned.

Rotel RCD-950. At first, it sounded high-resolution and dynamic. As time and my exposure to high-end components expanded, it sounded bright and etched. Thankfully, I was able to connect the digital out to a Meridian DAC. Alternatively. Kimber 8TC speaker cable - sounded great on my Micromega...

    Old Naim Naits

I did quite a bit of listening to a Nait 3R back in 1999, then bought a Nait 5i in 2004. I'm not sure if this is correct, but at the time, my dealer told me that the 5i had a passive preamp stage. I then moved to a 112/150, and that was a huge step up. I then added an Olive Flatcap, and found...

Unipivot arms - which one and what are the benefits?

My grandfather had a Mayware on a Thorens deck, and I found it incredibly twiddly. You also give up azimuth control. I've really fallen down on the side of silicone-damped arms, like the Well Tempered or Basis arms. The damping gives a solidity and stability that most unipivots seem to lack.

    Hana vs Sumiko

If there are any Dynavector cartridges in your price range, that would be something worth checking out. I have the 20X2 low-output (there's a high-output version too), and it's ridiculously good. I auditioned the 10X5 on a previous incarnation of my stereo, and it was heads and shoulders above...
