    Chromebook

I bought my wife a Chromebook (Lenovo N20p) two years ago and she loves it, so much so she is already terrified of it breaking down. No way back for her to Windows or Linux. I can't comment on the Acer one you linked to except to point out it has only 2gb of RAM - I would look for one with...

    External hard drive for music?

If you go for a USB hard drive, be aware of the issues with the USB-SATA chip and especially the fragile USB 3.0 connector. For an example discussion see here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6121 Even worse, the newer portable drives have this connector on the drive itself, so it...

    Tidal>Chromecast Audio in to MDAC/DAC

AFAIK there are no tweaks you could apply, but we are now totally into "subjectivist" territory! No one apart from you can determine what sounds best to your ears. Agree with Julf firmware should be kept up to date

USB Drive for Raspberry Pi to run Asset

My own experience has been that the pi struggles to provide enough power to any usb powered hard drive. That said, you could check that your power supply is powerful enough for your use case, and that your software is delivering the extra power to usb ports. I believe that at least a 2 amp power...

Tannoy to keep Prestige speaker production in Scotland

I fear celebration might be premature. There is no official press release I can find about this - only the WhatHifi article, and forgive me for not treating that as gospel. Unless someone has a link to another source? Forgive my cynicism but it smacks more of PR rather than a real change of...

    Chromecast Audio

Thanks for the tip, I got mine to work by opening the Google cast app and casting from there. Interestingly that way I can cast Spotify free as well - the Spotify app itself says you need a premium account to cast!

    Chromecast Audio

This is true however I understand the app itself has also to support casting - not all apps do. At least on my devices the RP app does not seem to support casting even though I am on android 6.0.1. Have you been able to get the official RP app to cast?

    Chromecast Audio

Not direct from the RP app on my Nexus 7 I can't. But if I use the Tune in radio app I can select radio paradise and cast it from there. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tunein.player

Downloading- what to get, what to do.

First, decide on your OS for your laptop -this potentially influences your choice of usb dac. Then buy or borrow a cheap usb dac for your preferred OS. Spend some time ripping some of your own CDs and make up your own list of favourite tracks for testing purposes. Convert them to lossless...

    Remove Ubuntu

Dumb question. Have you set the boot sequence in the bios so that the laptop first tries to boot from the DVD? And then what Radfordman said about using gparted or similar to format the disk.

SILENT laptop or other digital server?

A few more ideas.... You could dip your toes in the streaming water for cheap by buying a Chromecast Audio and using it as a bit perfect streamer - connected to the optical input of your Arcam DAC. (The Sonos Connect does this too of course, but I am not sure if if goes beyond 16/44). Have...
