    Quad 33 & 303 queries

I use a pair of 10dB Rothwell source attenuators on the output from my DAC to a Quad33. This used to match its range on the Quad volume control to other sources quite well. Now I’ve paired this system back and only have the DAC connected. I still use the 33 and set the volume control to 4 for...

Converting US power amplifier B&K ST125.2 to work in the UK

I presume the picture of the inside that folk have found is this one. http://www.aussieaudiomart.com/details/649364935-bampk-components-st1252-power-amplifier/images/1583562/ Note that the one in this picture runs at 240V. When yours arrives open it and look very carefully at how the spade...

    Toslink dust covers??

I guess you mean these. http://www.audioscope.net/toslink-dust-caps-p-2681.html Whether it’s worth €22 is another matter. Could try a piece of masking tape.

How much difference could a simple Banana plug make?

I can believe that this change did make a difference. I suspect the cause is more likely to have been down to unplugging and reconnecting cleaning the contacts or the adapter resulting in a better mechanical fit than any miracle quality of the adapter itself.

    sonos controller dropped

You could just switch off the automatic updates and stick with a version of Sonos that works with your controller. In my experience their “exciting new features” is just a euphemism for adding functionality to harvest personal data and bombard the user with intrusive advertisements.

It’s about time we had another cable thread.

Personally I prefer DIN to RCA. A better designed connector and reduced potential for connecting things up incorrectly.

    Packing advice please

If the mains lead is detachable don’t include it. Otherwise use one of those plastic plug protectors and wrap the plug in bubble wrap. I once received some kit where the plug had caused considerable damage to the metal case whilst in transit.

    AV Options

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Time for a progress update. I have pared down the hi-fi (items redeployed to other systems) and linked up the new TV to the DAC. I have also got the audio return channel working and that certainly simplifies the connections. Audio through the LS3/5as...

    System pics 2018

I like to listen in bed! Also, the history is that I used to have a dedicated listening room in one of the spare bedrooms but I rarely used it so I returned the room to being a guest bedroom and moved a scaled-down system into my room.

    AV Options

I currently have separate TV and Hi-Fi systems in my sitting room which is 21’ x 12’. Hi-Fi is a Quad 33/303 driving Falcon Acoustics LS3/5as and the TV is a 15 year old Panasonic PD30. I am replacing the latter with a modern Panasonic EZ952 with Panasonic DMP-UB900E Blu-ray player due to arrive...

    Please help with 78 cartridge

https://www.78rpmcommunity.com/beta/articles/13/78rpm-styli-a-handy-starting-point This article gives some advice on what size/shape stylus might be most suitable for your collection. IMHO this combined with the tracking weight and ability to fine-tune the TT speed is most relevant to getting...

    Please help with 78 cartridge

I use a Stanton 505.V3 with a 78 transcription stylus tracking at 6g, the higher end of the 2g - 7g range for the stylus. I don’t use a 78 phono stage, so the equalisation is wrong, but most of my 78s are quite worn and I doubt I’d notice too much difference.

    Half speed mastering

“If you can do it as a double album at 45rpm, that’s pretty much the ultimate you can get with records, there’s nothing else to squeeze out of the system.” Interesting that 78rpm has never really caught-on for stereo/vinyl.
