Nearfield monitors for use with Quad IIs?

If you are still deciding, take a look at Audio Note’s AX-2s. They are 90dB efficient and I ran mine with a loan pair of Quad IIs. They sounded really nice, They are currently out of production, but you can pick up a tidy pair from the usual suspects for about £500 or so.

The Good Guys: Seller Feedback (Part V)

Many thanks to tenpercenter for selling me his treasured Audio Note AX-2s in a pleasant and easy transaction earlier this week. They were exactly as described cosmetically and sonically.

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

Thanks Nic, another one to add to the ‘to investigate’ list. Organ concertos - I don’t know that many but I like Handel’s and the Organ Concerto in G Minor for timpani, strings and orchestra by Francis Poulenc is superb. Whereabouts in France are you? We’re planning a move to Charente-Maritime...

Graham Audio is making BOTH an LS3/5 and an LS3/5a

If my experience is anything to go by, the prices for vintage LS3/5as on eBay and elsewhere have made me rethink the wisdom of buying ‘old’ speakers and forced me to consider the contemporary and usually less expensive alternatives. The debate around pricing and spec can only be a good thing for...

Graham Audio is making BOTH an LS3/5 and an LS3/5a

I suppose it does seem a little curious that you have to part with nearly £2,500 for a pair of early serial number Chartwell LS3/5a currently on eBay, against nearly £1,900 for a brand new pair, using contemporary technology, with a five-year guarantee from Graham Audio. But this is the Rolex...

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

For those of you lucky enough to have the space to do justice to ESL57s and, assuming you enjoy the music of Pink Floyd, take a listen to the middle section of Echoes on side 2 of ‘Meddle’. I have never heard it bested by any other speaker.

    Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V3. Yes V3

I can probably find this out for myself easily enough but I wondered whether you heard from Stirling Broadcast whether an upgrade from v2 to v3 some way down the line might be possible? SB LS3/5As are on my audition radar, along with the much more expensive Falcon Acoustics LS3/5As, so this...

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

I’ve heard NS1000s on the end of some Quad IIs (and they were close to a rear wall) and sounded superb but, oh, the prices now.

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

I have had ESL57s and, for me, they still have the best mid-range of any speaker I have listened to. I’ve ruled them out on space grounds (my listening room is about 14’ by 10’) but they may come on to the radar.

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

Well, I have listened to full scale symphonies on the P3ESRs and was very pleasantly surprised. But my question was more about whether Quad 303a and Quad IIs, with their relative lack of grunt, would do them justice....

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

I’ve always liked the LS/5A and their more contemporary variants but always ruled them out because I am a bit of a bass monkey....I think they’re great for mid-range friendly music, but I listen to full-scale symphonies, organ concertos, ambient etc and I like to feel my teeth rattle.

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated. Might not Harbeth argue that the P3ESR is full-range, irrespective of frequency response?!

Which full-range speakers for 303 and Quad IIs?

To keep the story short and sweet, I am in the process of getting off the rather expensive SET merry go round and reverting to my first love, a Quad based vintage system. Call it old age, but this is the kit I was brought up on and various impending life changes dictate that I have to watch the...

    Vintage Quad system query

Thanks, very helpful advice. The jury is still out on the QC22, may have to consider a more contemporary Quad pre.
