Sources Hegel Mohican CD and Gyrorbe/RB330/Ania/Rega Fono MC
Speakers ATC SCM40As

What pre-amp would best complement the above?

Budget £3.5K must be one box and black.

What say you?

ATC ? Though I don't know if they come in black.
Sugden Masterclass?
Perhaps something from Naim or Exposure ?

McIntosh C47 definitely worth a try, not your typical offering, very musically engaging, looks great and the remote control is excellent too. Tone controls and input gain are unique to each input and memorised so you can balance up different sources. Has MM/MC phono stage built in, XLR or RCA ins and outs. Very versatile.

Hegel pre-amp they have balanced outs.

Naim works well with ATC, I run a 252/sc into mine. Just need a suitable lead which runs from power supply.

The above is possible 2nd hand.

Other alternative would be Bryston?

ATC only seem to come in silver.

The Mac DAC is good too, I use it for my classical listening as it has great separation and good timbre.

All down to preference, but I’m a bit of a fan of using a really nice valve preamp with active studio monitors as it seems to balance things out really well. I also seem to like at least one valve between me and a digital source! If they were mine I’d be looking at the better second hand options from Conrad Johnson, Audio Research, Nagra, Verdier etc etc, and from there tube-roll to taste.

midland audio has a superb bel canto pre amp , the vbs version is easily as good as MFA mark 2 classic . superb remote with 200 steps . I use one and have another as spare . great organic sound and i have just had a custom cable DC3 made to upgrade it. Max has it cheap at 695 as needs a power supply . unfortunately BC don`t make any more but vbs1 available for about 550 to 600 if you look [ i know someone selling a dac3.5 and vbs1 for about 1400 quid] the vbs1 does 3 components

One or two people i know use the bel canto pre 3 into scm active 40 , balanced outputs
