mid life crisis upgrade

Sloop John B

And any old music will do…
I've posted similar on the Naim forum but am very interested in what perspective Pink Fishers will bring to my "dilemma".

SJB turns 50 this year and has the following system.

CD555 (Chord STA)
NAC552
NAP300 (Chord STA)
SL2 (NACA5)
Naim n-sub
other sources:
Rega P3, SBT>nDAC/XPS2 (Hi-Line)
(all Naim products are non DR and are all powered by powerlines)

SJB mainly listens to CDs.
His collection has all been ripped to flac with dBpoweramp. Streaming is used for background music and playlists. Vinyl is only used where decent CD versions of the LPs are not available.

SJB has a fund of £10K which more than likely will be his last major hi-fi purchase (for some time).

So where should said Sloop spend his foldin' money?

I hope you have that lolly well hidden John? What tactics did you use to get that allocation???
Obviously you will have to dump all the N stuff and get a decent amp:D

Good Pc and Dac and new speakers(secondhand if possible)

I would sell the lot and buy something else your £10K will probably buy you something that will out perform all that overpriced Naim tat and you will have quids in the bank for a nice holiday.;)

Well I reckon nothing says mid life crisis (in hi-fi terms) as well as a really big dick pair of speakers - or perhaps a pair of gigantic Krell style power amps.

Can't get much better from naim from what you have there. Get a muso, sell the rest and counseling to get you free from the naim addiction...seriously its unhealthy to be that obsessive.

£10k for a birthday pressy to yourself....nice!
Same rules as usual apply though. What is it you think you're missing/not liking/ want more or less of? After all, you've already got a fairly pricey system there.
Anyway, if it was me, I'd be looking at alternative brands, if nothing else, just to ensure that Naim really is what you like before committing to spending a lot more down the same road.
Vitus Audio stuff for instance. Or valves maybe.
If, having heard a few alternatives, you're still convinced that Naim stuff is where it's at for you, I'd be looking to improve the speakers. I've never been a fan of sl2's even with a sub.
I'd also be looking at room acoustics &/or room correction applications, which would only take up a small part of your £10k yet potentially make a big improvement.
Enjoy spending it!
Matt.

I'm going to regret asking this here ain't I :)

Seriously that is a lot euro John. I think you need to get out and hear some kit locally. If you dumped the unameable stuff you would have a serious budget to get you over this crisis situation in your life!

Maybe also a trip to the UK to a place like Midlandaudio. John carries a good range of kit and often has very good secondhand stuff. Mickair to Birmingham and car hire for the day would be a small investment to open the mind

I'm actually really happy with my system at the moment and were it not for an auspicious birthday I wouldn't be thinking of anything major. That's the " mid- life crisis bit".

In reality the second source, the NAS based music is possibly where I will spend my money but I am unclear as to what direction to follow. Ideally what I'd like is the functionality of the Squeezebox, with the sound quality of Naim. I remain to be fully convinced about Naim streaming, it still is nowhere near as intuitive and as feature laden as the Squeezebox .

Part of me then thinks that I'd be better off if the HD or NAS based music was not Naim derived, perhaps something with different sonic characteristics. Another part of me thinks " do I really want to be messing about with ferrite chokes and different USb cables and Ethernet cables etc" - No being the answer.

In in reality I should just wait for the dust to settle in this new music paradigm and enjoy what I have and enjoy.

But but I have this mid-life crisis upgrade itch!

SJB

It's not a midlife crisis if it doesn't have a motorbike in there somewhere! Or a Thai bride.

Yep. Midlife crisis upgrades include:
  • Trading the missus in for a newer model (much much much more expensive than 10k)
  • Hair regrowth treatment
  • Gym membership
  • Lycra cycling shorts
  • Viagra
  • Just for men
  • Open top car

Or more sensibly:
  • More expensive wine
  • Taxi rides to and from nights out
  • Attending more live music
  • More time with friends
  • Open top car

Get the Naim gear DR'd, add some SL cable. That should dispose of a good portion of the 10k.

Or get off the Naim train altogether as has been suggested.
