Did all of the composers just stick a number after their name?
I can see the thought process: "Right, I've done 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, so what should I call my next work? I know - 6!"

you like this one better than giulini and walter?

vuk.

Yes... I've got about a dozen Bruckner 9ths and I've never got what the fuss is about Walter's, to me it seems underplayed and soft. Guilini was my favourite for a long time until I listened to the Wand in Lubeck again a few months ago. The Guilini recording is still a great one.

Last night I heard a new contender - Jaap van Zweden & Netherlands RSO on Japanese label Exton SACD, very good indeed plus gorgeous sound.

1. Dvorak 6, 7 and 9 - Kubelik, Berlin Philharmonic
2. Schubert 9 - Solti, Vienna Philharmonic
3. Bruckner 8 - Schuricht, Vienna Philharmonic
4. Bruckner 9 - Giulini, Vienna Philharmonic
5. Sibelius 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 - Vanska, Lahti Symphony Orchestra
6. Mahler 5 - Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic
7. Mahler 6 - Bernstein, Vienna Philharmonic
8. Mozart 36 - Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic
9. Brahms 2 - Chailly, Concertgebouw
10. Brahms 1, 3 and 4 - Abbado, Berlin Philharmonic

Okay, that's a lot more than 10. I cheated.

hey ross.

have you heard bruno walter (sorry to keep bringing the guy up) doing mozart's 36th on sony (a CBS re-issue)? it's part of a set of the late symphonies and includes disc of the lintz rehearsal. anyhow, it's a 36th i'm very fond of.

those abbado brahms performances are great. i like #2 best so i'll have to try the chailly you prefer.

guys.

Yes, I do have that Walter Mozart disc somewhere, as well as his Brahms, and his Bruckner 9. All are very good and I rate them very highly.

You may prefer the Abbado Brahms 2 to Chailly, since Abbado produces a much more muscular orchestral sound (which I know you like). The Chailly version is softer and more pastoral, which I prefer for this symphony. Let me know if you like it.

Dvorak and Sibelius were both great composers, and their symphonies are definitely at the top of the favourites list if ranked by frequency of playing.
