Which auto turntable

I have decided that i listen to two few records to bother with a traditional TT. I also want to plug one into my Phantoms. I have an SL10 and 7 both requiring a service and new belt. However I am open to other suggestion such as the Revox or something from B & O. I appreciate that the cartridge choice will have a sizeable impact so would need advice on pairing.

Budget £500 although This is flexible.

If you can find one, some of the last ever Garrard decks from the era 1979 -1982 are worth looking for.

Whilst often derided for being plastic construction, if you can get a good one, they're worth listening to.

I have a garrard ddq650 which sounds very good with a brand new Shure m97xe cartridge in it.

It does not disgrace itself, when up against many more of the 'established' and 'industry favoured' turntables.

If you remember back to the time, the Garrard name was at its lowest ebb, and all we were being preached from the press was the likes of Dual cs505, Rega Planar 2 and 3 and of course LP12.

Whilst the Revox may offer substantial quality, expect to have to pay handsomely for likely specialist repairs and servicing.

Hmm, a B&O (and its cartridge!) will be well within your grasp for £500. If you fancy going for it, it doesn't get much better than a Beogram 8002 with MMC2 - it might just surprise you with its sound quality.

Other than that, if you have an SL10 then get it serviced and use it! As Stuart says, it's difficult to better its overall package of convenience, ease of use and sound quality.

As to the Garrard DDQ650, its a good choice for a £50 budget. Less appealing for a £500 one, though.

I am struggling to find anyone to service it locally (ish) to me. I live just outside St. Albans. There is a chap in Bolton but that would involve shipping back and forth which I am always a bit worried about with a turntable.

There was a place called Vantage Audio a few years back that knew about repairing SL-10's but they don't seem to exist anymore?

Go for a Revox.
It will give you many happy hours of fun trying to get it to work properly and you might even mess up a few LPs while you are at it.
Don't waste your money.
The best things Revox did from that time were the B77 and the Tuner.

There is a chap in Bolton....

He has my SL7 for service/ repair.

Hopefully the wait will be worth it as he has a huge backlog of general repairs, lord knows how he decides whose turn it is next!

I'm fortunate that he is (relatively) local.

There is a rather nice looking Pioneer PL L1000 for £595 BIN on a certain auction site. Seller appears to be a record dealer in Cheshire. A little over the suggested budget but it looks a lot of TT.

Having done a bit of research they do seem to be quite fragile as they are getting on a bit. I would be a bit hesitant to invest £ 600 quid unless it had been fully serviced and fettled as I doubt I would get my money back if I didn't like it.

I think I will need to buy a fully renovated SL 7 or 10 and send my SL7 and 10 off to be sorted.

Apologies for de-railing your thread slightly, but who is the "chap in Bolton "?

I have an SL7 in need of repair. Contact details please. (Or via PM)

Cheers

Matthew

You can spend 500 flexible squid on good TTs now that won't give you any problems.
Why waste your money?
I have a boxed 1977/8 ADC Accutrac signed by Claire Francis in my shed.
It never worked for more than a month from new.
I've had it from new but got it for free.
